A message from host Amie Quirarte: Tahoe! I am so dang excited to share that I am hosting a FREE event at The Tahoe Backyard on October 28th. I have been desperately wanting to put together a community event in Kings Beach for a while, and this is the perfect debut! If all goes well, it is something I hope to do every year. Sneaky Creatures will be playing from 3:30-5:30pm; Men Wielding Fire will be serving up delicious food at 50 percent off; Chickadee Art Collective will have a Halloween crafts table set up for the kiddos; and costumes are encouraged! And most of all, we can all be together, having fun, dancing, and drinking beers as we say goodbye to fall and hello to winter!

  1. OCT. 28: NEVADA DAY PARADE, CARSON CITY

Lucky for us, Nevadans get an extra holiday right around Halloween to celebrate the founding of the Silver State (it was deemed the 36th state admitted into the Union on October 31, 1864). Head down to Carson City on the Saturday beforehand for a day full of festivities, including the famous Nevada Day Parade downtown that travels in front of the capitol building.

Other noteworthy events in nearby communities:

If you have Friday, October 27th off for Nevada Day, then consider heading over to Truckee for a Halloween Parade at the Train Depot at 4:30pm and ending at the Community Arts Center at 6pm. Costumed kids of all ages are welcome to trick or treat.

There’s a lot going on in Tahoe City on Halloween, too. Local businesses will be passing out candy, Watson Cabin will be open for viewing (and serving apple cider), and the Tahoe City PUD will have a Huntin’ for Pumpkins contest going on from 4pm-6pm. Sign up at Heritage Plaza.

Whatever you do, be safe, brush your teeth after eating all that candy, and take the TART Connect if you’ve had too much fun and need a safe way to get home. Happy Halloween!

In The News – Incline Village local launches new streaming platform

Move over Netflix and Hulu, there’s a new streaming platform in town. Launched by Tahoe locals on October 3, 2023, Airtime Streaming features a collection of indie-made winter sports films and documentaries. For just $3.99 a month, you can stream ski and snowboard films and documentaries, along with exclusive content such as interviews with the athletes and filmmakers.

“The idea came from when I was back up in Lake Tahoe, not last winter, but the winter before.  I was coaching the Free Ride team at Sugar Bowl, and made a documentary called Room and Board, about the housing crisis in the Lake Tahoe area through the lens of the ski and snowboard community.  And, in making that film, I got to know a lot of filmmakers involved in the ski and snowboard industry up in Tahoe and started learning about their experiences. I saw a terrible gap in the distribution of these films, “says Airtime Streaming founder Elizabeth Cameron.

I would like to thank the Incline Village-Crystal Bay community for welcoming me and accepting me as they have. From day one, I have received nothing but support, commitment, and dedication from the community in a collaborative effort to keep this amazing slice of the Tahoe Basin safe.  I have thoroughly enjoyed every single minute of the last 10+ months and truly feel as though I am retiring as part of this family. I am forever grateful to each of you for the support, love, and acceptance given to me. I will miss each and every one of you, but am excited for what the future holds.

School Counselor Tackling Mental Health & Wellness with Incline Village Middle Schoolers

October 14, 2023 | Member Submitted

Written by Parker Casey, 8th Grade

School counselor, author, and journalist Phyllis L. Fagell visited Lake Tahoe School last week to talk about youth mental health and wellness, as outlined in her new book called Middle School Superpowers: Raising Resilient Teens in Turbulent Times. She spoke to 4th through 8th grades and to the parents at night, and I had the opportunity to speak with her one-on-one about some of the topics she discussed.

In her sessions with students, she started by sharing advice written by middle school students from previous schools she visited. As she read the advice from previous schools, students began to realize that everyone in their age group is wrestling with a lot of the same challenges. She hears so many of the same stories from the same schools, state to state and even from different countries. She then asked students to anonymously write down something that they wished their parents knew about being a middle school student, which she would later share with parents at a community presentation that evening.

After a brief presentation on the 12 middle school superpowers, Ms. Fagell had kids do value exercises where she asked students to fill out a worksheet with different traits in decision-making. When kids know how to make decisions using a more stable framework rather than relying solely on their instincts, they tend to make decisions that lead to fewer regrets and bring out the best in them. Ms. Fagell then encouraged students to write advice to share with rising middle schoolers. She does this at every school she visits because she believes that middle schoolers are incredibly wise, and we don’t tap into their ability to help other students as much as we should.

When I spoke with her, she shared how middle schoolers can often have a reputation for being mean, reckless, and even lazy, and if the students hear and absorb those negative messages, it can negatively impact them. Ms. Fagell argues that the negative stereotypes are not true, and that these are kids who want to be good people who do the right thing and treat their friends well. They do not have a lot of life experience and they are still acquiring social skills, so things like jealousy or trying to impress someone get in the way and that can lead to some social clumsiness.

In her evening presentation, Ms. Fagell shared the notes about things they wished their parents knew about middle school, which was eye-opening for many of the parents, and helped them learn how to help their kids activate their “superpowers.” Ms. Fagell loves middle schoolers because she believes that they are incredibly funny and interesting and the perfect mix of sophisticated and child-like. She showed how adults can support them and help them develop a positive self-image, compassion, and a willingness to take healthy risks. We are thankful for her visit and look forward to more from Lake Tahoe School’s Speaker Series on Youth Mental Wellness!

In The News – Discounted Food for Mountain Folk

Smack in the middle of 2020, amid Covid-19, when masks were about to become mandatory in many places and vaccines weren’t yet available for the public, Grocery Outlet opened in Truckee off Donner Pass Road.

Hurdles were vaulted and the grocery store’s reception has “been phenomenal and well received by the community,” said Ryan Parrish, a co-owner of the Truckee location with his wife, Shannon.

Now, just over three years later, the Parrishes are opening another Grocery Outlet location on Nov. 16, this one in Incline Village.

“We’re super excited about this,” Ryan said. “Going back a couple years, we had heard that the owner of Village Market was gonna retire, and we’ve always been interested in having a little bit bigger footprint in North Lake Tahoe than just Truckee … The timing worked out great for us and to have a location that’s already an existing grocery store that had history. We know [Village Market owner Ron Stanger] was successful and very community-focused and that’s exactly what we want to try and come in and carry: The owner of Village Market was very local, and that’s our big thing.”

In The News – Christin Hanna and the LTDC: Teaching Girls to Soar

Lake Tahoe Dance Festival Opening Night Gala, July 26, 2023. Credit Photo: Erin Baiano

The summer of 2020, when my four kids were moping about the cancellation of school and snowboard competitions, I drove them to a beach on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe about 40 minutes from our house. By the time we got there, there were no parking spots, so I meandered into a quiet neighborhood of Tahoma, nestled beneath a sea of sugar and Jeffrey pines. I was about to pull over and take a nap when Riley, age 7, shouted from the backseat, “Ms. Christin!”

In a vacant lot between two homes, beneath the dappled shade of the forest, a lithe figure spun the finest piqué turns upon a 28-by-24-feet portable stage. Her movement was so effortless, as if she were in cinematic slow motion, that tears filled my eyes. I didn’t know if I was more moved by this act of defiance, dancing when the world seemed to be shutting down, or the courage of Christin Hanna, the founder and artistic director of the Lake Tahoe Dance Collective (LTDC), to establish ground zero for her students, protect a sense of normalcy for our kids, and maintain one thing that we didn’t have to give up.
