Pine Nuts – Corporate Trust

January 22, 2023 | McAvoy Lane

News reporters tend to mingle with a wider variety of people than those in most other professions. I happen to know this because for fifteen years before Mark Twain tapped me on the shoulder, I was a radio reporter, a malnourished profession at the time that I might have killed-off single-handedly.
Unlike investigative reporters, my motto was, “If It’s Catered It’s News!” And it is amazing how much news you can carry away from a catered corporate event. However, I must caution you, if you are considering getting into the profession of radio news yourself, it can be dangerous…

Not that long ago, maybe forty years, I was covering a swanky corporate soirée when they decided to hold a team-building event. They formed a couple parallel lines of colleagues and called for a volunteer to fall backwards and be caught by this trusting procession, but nobody stepped forward. Well, I was just young enough, and full of enough champagne, to volunteer my services.

While waving bravely to a smattering of applause, I stepped up to the podium of trust.

A big lady, who looked like she had the night off from Big Time Wrestling, helped me into my position, where I was to fall backwards from a slightly elevated perch.

There turned out to be one flaw to this arrangement that had not occurred to me; they did not know me from Adam, and could not have cared a farthing about me unless maybe Eve had been standing up there next to me in period costume.

Just as I was getting situated in my fallback position and everybody was positioned to catch me, there boomed an announcement over the loudspeaker, “LAST CALL!”

A chill ran through my body as the Big Time Wrestling Lady patted me on the chest, and pushed me backwards into my mosh pit, which was suddenly migrating to the hosted bar.

So there I was, falling confidently backwards in midair, alone with my thoughts, waiting for my trusted colleagues to catch me before hitting the hardwood floor, when I realized my trusted colleagues had left me to fend for myself. I actually heard a parting farewell, “Sorry Pal!”

As good fortune would have it, my brother had loaned me a Farmer’s Almanac before leaving home for my reporting assignment, and that Farmer’s Almanac, that I had stuck into my pants, broke my fall to the hardwood floor. The thud I made caught the attention of the Big Time Wrestling Lady. I laid there a moment, hoping somebody might bring me a drink, but nobody did. Then bless her soul, the Big Time Wrestling Lady brought me a pig in a blanket, and confided to me with an earnest whisper into my ear, “You’ll never make it in Big Time Wrestling, Honey.”

I got out of radio news the next morning, and as I was too skinny for Big Time Wrestling, what was next? To be continued…

Incline Education Fund Secures Two $50,000 STEM Grants for Incline Schools

January 18, 2023 | Mary Danahey

The Incline Education Fund (IEF) was awarded a $50,000 grant in early October from the Washoe County Community Reinvestment Program for the Incline High School Engineering and Entrepreneurship program. They received a second $50,000 grant this January from the Nevada Governor’s Office of Science, Innovation and Technology (OSIT) to support the Incline Middle School Robotics Program.

Founded in late 2019, the nonprofit Incline Education Fund is the leading champion for Incline’s public schools. With an impressive list of successful projects, it now adds these grant awards to its list of accomplishments.

“Our focus this school year is on continuing to lay the groundwork to create a K12 STEM pathway for the Incline public schools,”

Mary Danahey

IEF Cofounder

With the push for STEM expertise, Danahey said that IEF realizes students will always need strong core academic skills in order to succeed in these exciting new programs.

To ensure that all students are prepared, IEF has partnered with Tahoe Tutoring “to provide extra academic reinforcement to those who most need a little extra help at both Incline Elementary and Middle School,” explained cofounder Sharon Schrage. “Plans are also underway to give that same additional attention to students above grade level to foster extra academic enrichment.”

In just the past two years, the Incline Education Fund has become the driving force in bringing innovative educational programs to Incline schools.

“Despite headwinds from shrinking school budgets and the pandemic, IEF is proving that local energy can creatively address the challenge of preparing students for the jobs of the future”

Sharon Schrage

IEF Cofounder

Recent Incline Education Fund’s successful programs include:

  • Successful pilot & launch of UNR’s Dean’s Future Scholars pilot program
    • Ongoing mentorship program at Incline Middle School
  • The Courage Project pilot program at Incline Elementary School
    • Ongoing program to build resiliency at IES
  • IEF Sponsored educational events
    • including: Mock Interview Day, EdPlanIt College Boot Camp, TERC Science Expo, Incline Elementary School Parent Nights
  • Technology Drive for Incline Middle School
    • Raised $100,000+ to provide laptops for each student
  • Incline Elementary School Makerspace
    • Raised $100,000+ for a robotics and coding lab

In addition to academic support, Incline Education Fund is also underwriting some of the Incline Middle Schools’ Exploratory classes, including swimming and the new culinary class this semester.  Outside of the classroom, IEF has partnered with AAUW Tahoe-Nevada to bring both a Girls Who Code chapter and a Culinary Club to students. IEF is also working with both Incline Village Rotary Groups to update the Incline Middle School library.

IEF is always looking for individuals willing to share their skills and experience as mentors, coaches or as a speaker. “Volunteers are always needed to help with tutoring or as reading buddies, classroom aides, subject specialists and most importantly, substitute teachers.”

To learn more or to donate, email Mary Danahey, maryd@inclineeducationfund.org, Sharon Schrage, sharons@inclineeducationfund.org, or visit the Incline Education Fund website.

Message from Captain Solferino

January 16, 2023 | Member Submitted

During my twenty-three career with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office I have never had a more memorable experience than the one delivered to me by the residents of Incline Village, and the privilege of serving as Commander of the Incline Village Sub-station.  Due to the generous donation of the Dave and Cheryl Duffield Foundation, to increase presence and public safety in Incline Village this assignment would not have been possible.  For the past 20 months, we have come together in forum and CAB meetings, discussed critical Lake Tahoe clarity measures, micro-mobility hubs, transportation, crime reduction strategies, parking issues, speed zones, environmental design, a Justice Center, Main Street Foundation, population growth, short term rentals, and have come together as a community.

The culmination of my tenure in Incline was the reinstatement of the Incline Village Community Picnic where Sheriff’s Office Personnel and the Incline Village Rotary came together and served hot dogs and hamburgers to over 1,000 residents.  Seeing everyone out in the public on a beautiful fall afternoon touring and visiting with Sheriff’s Office personnel and fellowship was what we’ve strived for with the reopening of the substation – community engagement.  I know we have made great strides, but we have more work left to do.  We have integrated into local schools with the assistance of the Incline Village Boosters, we have paired with the North Lake Tahoe Protection District to address the need of a Public Safety Pier in Incline Village, we work closely with the Incline Village Justice Court and now provide bailiff and civil services to the court, we work with Washoe County Management and Commissioner Hill to address the needs of our community and work side by side with IVCBA and the many civic endeavors they support throughout the year.  The leadership team we have assembled in Incline Village has done what we’ve asked them to do.  Unfortunately, with success and movement comes change and it is with a heavy heart I share the following with you.

On January 16, 2023 I will take over as Operations Chief Deputy of the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office and part of Sheriff Darin Balaam’s Executive Team.  With this promotion, Captain Blaine Beard will replace me as the new Incline Village Commander.  Captain Beard brings over twenty-five years of experience in Detention, Operations, and Administration to the residents of Incline Village last serving as the Special Operations Division Captain over SWAT, K9, Detectives, Search and Rescue, and Regional Teams.  Captain Beard is excited to get out into the community and build even stronger relationships and work on the many projects we have in various degrees of completion.  Lt. Miceli remains as the Watch Commander of Incline Village along with Sergeants Colacurcio, Cholico, and Atkinson.  Sgt. Bales is new to Incline Village filling in for the vacancy created by Sgt. Sewell’s promotion to Lieutenant, also effective  January 16, 2023.  Sgt. Bales brings a wealth of SWAT and training experience to the residents and deputies assigned to Incline Village.  We are lucky to have him.  Sgt. Colacurcio will take the duties of the Administrative Sergeant and Incline Village Justice court.  He will coordinate public safety campaigns, school demos, civic engagements, social media, and the Incline Village Justice Court among other duties.  We are in the process of training other sergeants to fill the various shift positions in the division and will make notifications when training is complete and personnel have been assigned.

It has been my pleasure serving the residents of Incline Village.  You have made my family and I feel extremely welcomed and valued as members of the community.  It would only be for an amazing opportunity, such as the one offered to me by Sheriff Balaam, to leave this community for a promotion.  The good news is I will still be very integrated into the community, events, and residents as Chief Deputy of Operations.  I look forward to seeing what we can continue to build upon together.  Please welcome Captain Beard to Incline Village.  I can’t wait to see what you can accomplish together!

Top Headlines from the Washoe County Board of County Commissioners Meeting

January 16, 2023 | Member Submitted

The following are highlights from the January 18, 2023 Washoe County Board of County Commissioners meeting:

  1. Board ratifies State of Emergency for the weather: A State of Emergency was declared earlier this month for the series of winter storms that hit northern Nevada in rapid succession over the New Year holiday. The declaration was written to expire on Feb. 6, 2023, but terminates immediately if not approved by the Board of County Commissioners. The Board unanimously approved the declaration.

“It’s important that we have an emergency declaration because it enables us to move things very quickly,” Assistant County Manager Dave Solaro said. “It provides us the ability to work outside our employment agreements so we can pull people in and do the work that’s needed. We can make sure we have the people and equipment. Our operators are tired, but excited as well to provide for the safety of our community.”

Washoe County has prepared for potential flooding as the storms are forecast to bring a mix of heavy rain and heavy snow through next week.

  1. Commissioners upheld Planning Commission’s denial of development code related to cannabis lounges: The Planning Commission denied code amendments to Chapter 110 (development code) at its Dec. 6, 2022, meeting. Washoe County Planning Manager Chad Giesinger presented an overview of the codes, amendments, and licenses for cannabis consumption lounges. Today’s action applies only to the proposed development code amendment related to the cannabis lounges. The Board of County Commissioners voted to 3 to 2 to uphold the Planning Commission’s denial of amendments to the development code.

Because the denial was upheld, no further action was taken on proposed amendments to Washoe County Code for cannabis consumption lounges.
