Opening Day: July 1st at the Christmas Tree Village – Next to Crosby’s

On Saturday July 1st, Incline Village’s newest thrift store will be having a big thrift store event to benefit the Village Pet Foundation. VPF thrift store features clothing, jewelry, furniture, pictures, flatware, sports items, purses/bags, games, toys, pet items, silverware, home decor, books and more.

Our pets are our friends, our companions…our family.  Village Pet Foundation was founded because every pet deserves the best care possible to live its best life.  Compassionate, quality pet care for all pets is our primary goal. The Village Pet Foundation helps families and individuals who are struggling financially to pay for veterinary bills for their sick or suffering pets. VPF is a 501 c3 non profit corporation.

Village Pet Foundation is a new organization that is 100% volunteer-run. They are committed to ensuring healthy and happy pets by giving charitable financial grants to pet families whose pets need vital veterinary care.

This organization was created in 2022 to serve pet families in need of financial help in the Lake Tahoe basin.  And our mission is simple yet powerful: to help individuals and families in our community with veterinary care for their domestic pets.

In The News: ‘Back by popular demand’- Lakeside yoga series to benefit Incline Elementary School

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — Back by popular demand, Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort, Spa, and Casino has announced a unique lakeside yoga event series hosted by DJ JOOLZ and local yoga instructor Alexandra Farrer. 

The summer events will be open to resort guests and local residents on a suggested $10 donation that will benefit the Incline Elementary School “Step up for Stem” program. 

The lakeside yoga sessions will take place on June 29, July 13, Aug. 3, Aug.17, Sept. 14, and Sept. 28, with registration beginning at 5 p.m. and classes to begin at 5:30 p.m.

In The News: Forest Service contains fire near Spooner Summit

Update – As of 7:30 p.m. Friday June 23, the fire has been contained at 1/2 acre. A spokesperson for the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit confirmed the fire was lightning caused. 

GLENBROOK, Nev. – According to the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit’s Twitter, a small fire has started on the East Shore of Lake Tahoe in Montreal Canyon south of US Hwy 50. 

LTBMU is reporting the fire, named the Genoa Fire, was reported at 3:26 p.m. on Friday, June 23 and as of 4:15 p.m., it approximately 1/2 acre….

PINE NUTS – Adios King George

A message to my fellow menfolk: Shun the fireworks. Everybody knows all the bodies exhumed from Pompeii were men.  When Vesuvius erupted the women fled, while the men gathered together in the courtyard to watch the eruption, and place bets on how long it would last. 

Women, bless their good souls, have never taken an interest in fireworks, nor have dogs. A dog will usually run and hide behind a toilet when the fireworks start. My aunt Mildred sat down on a toilet during the fireworks once, and a weenie dog licked her leg. Her mind was never the same.

I caution the gentle reader with this caveat from Mark Twain, “We call April first, ‘All Fool’s Day.’  Well, that is a misnomer, because statistics show we lose more fools on the 4th of July than all the other holidays of the year put together.” 

  Thanks to the Declaration of Independence, signed on July 4th, 1776, we have no monarchs to bow down to in this country, unless we count Beyonce and Taylor Swift, who also tax us, if not in the same manner that royalty used to tax us…

I’ve had the honor of reading the Declaration of Independence on the Fourth at various public forums over the years, with one reading culminating in a Marine Corps flyover that gave me chicken-skin all over. Over the years I have fallen in love with that wonderful olde bulwark, particularly Jefferson’s words, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” I don’t care what you want to tell me about Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings, the guy was a brick!

By the way, as a note of interest, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died on the same day, July 4th, exactly fifty years following their signing of the Declaration of Independence.  Not coincidentally, Samuel Clemens died during the perihelial passage of Haley’s Comet, which was his expressed desire.  The point being, if there’s something in the future you’d like to live to see and celebrate, mark that date on your calendar today with a permanent marker.  Chances are, you will live to see that event, and celebrate it.

I try to keep in mind what we are celebrating on this July Fourth, freedom from that egregious old ass, King George, but more importantly, we celebrate our freedoms, and those who sacrificed so dearly to secure and protect those freedoms.

This year, 2023, let us treat ourselves to a spectacular and safe SkyShow starting at 7pm on the evening of the 4th at the Incline Village Ridgeline Ball Fields. And let us lift our glasses sotto voce in honor of our veterans, those with us, and those having gone to the Great Beyond. Semper Fi! See you at the parade!

Flag Retirement Ceremony Hosted by IVCB Veterans Club

Incline Village Crystal Bay Veterans Club will host a ceremonial flag retirement on Monday, July 3rd on the Village Green. 

The ceremonial flag retirement is a dignified and respectful process of retiring or disposing of a flag that has become worn, faded, torn, or otherwise unfit for display while emphasizing respect and reverence. 

The event will begin at 7:45 PM with a bugler and bagpiper. The flag retirement burning will be timed with sunset. 

Collection boxes have been placed at the following locations for you to drop off your flag if it is time for its retirement and you are unable to attend the ceremony: 

  • IVGID Recreation Center
  • Incline Village Library
  • Email Lettie Miller for other drop-off arrangements. 

Please note: if there is something special about your flag, we will respectfully share it during the ceremony if you include a note with information when you drop it off.

In The News: Diver drowns on Father’s Day at Sand Harbor

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — One person died on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 18. after a report of a diver in distress. 

After a report of a diver in distress, North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District responded to Diver’s Cove at Sand Harbor where Public Information Officer Tia Rancourt told the Tribune, “Upon arrival, State Parks lifeguards and rangers were bringing the patient in from the water. We transported the patient to Incline Village Community Hospital where the individual was pronounced deceased.”

The name of the victim and cause of death have not yet been released.

Graduation Season

As we celebrate the 82, 2023 Incline High School (IHS) graduates, we can share their joy in their achievements and also honor those who helped them along the way.  Academically, 12 graduates are members of the National Honors Society and over 50% of this year’s graduates took AP Classes.  At the athletic level, again over 50 % of IHS students participated in sports throughout the year.  This year there was an IHS Boys Soccer State Championship win and a gold for a graduate in the shot put at the Spring Track and Field State Meet.  Proving the point that Incline students shine in the classroom as well as on the field, the Girls Track team won first place in 2A Academic All-State with a combined GPA of 3.73.  

Looking forward, this year’s IHS graduates are headed off to further their education in challenging arenas like Italy’s Florence Institute Of Culinary Arts and highly selective colleges such as Notre Dame and Amherst College. IHS graduates are also attending  NCAA Basketball powerhouse schools Gonzaga and San Diego State University.  Other students have chosen to serve their country and are enrolling in the US Armed Forces.  Locally, a strong cohort of students are headed down to our Tier 1 University neighbor, University of Nevada, Reno while others are taking advantage of the Nevada Promise Scholarship to attend Truckee Meadows Community College or the College Promise Scholarship at Lake Tahoe Community College in order to be able to further their education without any student debt.

The excellent quality of an Incline education was recently recognized at the state level with the Nevada Governor’s Office of Science, Information and Technology (OSIT) awarding both Incline Elementary School and Incline High School a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Designation. Designation as a Governor’s STEM School denotes that both Incline Elementary School and Incline High School meet the highest standards of STEM instruction and are models for schools around the state.  (Plans are fully underway for Incline Middle School to apply for–and achieve the same NV Governor’s Office STEM Designation).  This will make the three Incline schools the first and only K12 STEM pathway in Nevada.  This does not mean that Incline students will only focus on the sciences.  A critical part of a STEM education includes collaborative work, problem-solving, communication and critical thinking– skills that Incline’s nationally recognized ‘We the People’ class excel at throughout their competition season.  These vital skills are also strengthened in IHS elective classes such as Drama, Music, Culinary Arts and the new IHS Internship program as well as all their core academic subjects.

At the younger level, 5th grade graduates at Incline Elementary School (IES) are headed off to Incline Middle School (IMS) with an impressive six years (K-5) of music education.  Additionally, this year’s crop of rising IMS students have two full years of Robotics and Coding instruction under their belts thanks to the recent addition of the Makerspace Curriculum.  This Award-Winning Curriculum Has Prepared IES Students for the challenge of the new Robotics program at IMS. There, they will learn more advanced programming languages and have the opportunity for experiential learning through flying drones and deepening their understanding of robotics.  Rising 9th graders are coming out of IMS with a year of Exploratory programs in their academic tool kits.  These new skills include but are not limited to: learning about entrepreneurship through a collaboration with Incline Bowl; future animal care careers with the Pet Network;, Botany and Horticulture; the Culinary Arts as well as Physical Education Programs that embraced the outdoors such as Cross-Country Skiing (made possible by Nevada Nordic and Tahoe-Multi-sport) and swimming (through a collaboration fully paid for by the Incline Education Fund).

The achievements noted above are only possible with a strong foundation of support and encouragement along the way.  From the first day of kindergarten through their last day of finals, Incline students have had a strong team of dedicated teachers, administration and staff who care deeply about each individual student.  Each of the opportunities and programs listed above was originally just the dream of an Incline Village educator.  Through perseverance, hours of hard work, dedication and a strong belief in their students, Incline Village education staff gave each graduating student the strong foundation to succeed in whatever path they chose.

Thank you Incline Educators and Congratulations 2023 Graduates!  In the words of Dr. Seuss, “You’re off to great places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So get on your way!”

Celebrating Our Local Veterans

Join us for the remarkable 3-day Incline Village Crystal Bay Local Heroes 4th of July Celebration, where we proudly honor and express our gratitude to our local veterans and active military service personnel.

Kicking off the festivities on Sunday, July 2, the Local Heroes Parade will be led by our esteemed Parade Grand Marshal, MacAvoy Layne. Making a stunning appearance in his 1930 Ford Model A Woodie Wagon will be Jim Nowlin, a past parade Grand Marshal representing the IVCB Veterans Club.

On Monday, July 3rd, we extend a warm invitation to our local Veterans for a special Veterans Recognition luncheon at Aspen Grove, generously sponsored by Cornerstone Church. Tickets will be available at the door, and all Veterans will be admitted free of charge.

As the sun begins to set on the 3rd of July, the Vet Club will host their annual Flag Retirement Ceremony, weather permitting. We invite everyone to participate by bringing their old and worn flags, which will be retired in the traditional manner, providing a ceremonial opportunity to pay tribute to our nation’s symbol.

On the much-anticipated 4th of July, the festivities commence with the IVCB Veterans Club Pancake Breakfast at Aspen Grove, open to all. This breakfast serves as the Club’s largest annual fundraiser and offers a fantastic opportunity to meet and express appreciation to our local heroes. Enjoy a scrumptious meal of pancakes, bacon, sausage, and blueberries, and for those who wish, optional Mimosas and Bloody Marys will be available. Admission prices are $10 for adults, and $5 for individuals aged 12 and above, while children aged 5 and younger can indulge for free.

Join us in honoring and celebrating our local heroes throughout this incredible 3-day Incline Village Crystal Bay Local Heroes 4th of July Celebration. Let’s come together as a community to show our heartfelt appreciation and respect for those who have served our nation so selflessly.

IVGID And General Manager Consider Separation

INCLINE VILLAGE, NEVADA (JUNE 19, 2023)

Incline Village General Improvement District (IVGID) General Manager Indra Winquest has announced his intention to separate from the District. IVGID’s employment agreement with Mr. Winquest is set to expire on June 30, 2024.

“After much consideration, separating from the District is the right decision for myself and my family,” said Mr. Winquest. “I want to give my most heartfelt gratitude to all the residents that have voiced their support for me and the hardworking staff at IVGID.”

The IVGID Board of Trustees will consider a separation agreement at their June 23 board meeting.

Mr. Winquest has been the General Manager of IVGID since July 2020.

In The News: Veteran, woman-owned gifting company makes big impact on tight-knit community

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — There’s something special about Incline Village that brings people from all walks of life here to start something new. 

For owners of Tahoe Gifting Co., graphic designer Darya Shahvaran and veteran Matthew Rautio, the small and beautiful community seemed like the perfect place to place roots in 2020 after trying to find a place to live here for a few years. 

While it was not their intention to start a business, the idea arose after the duo put together a special thank you basket for their real estate agent, who was blown away by the incredible quality and thoughtfulness.
