In The News – IES Showcases Its Makerspace Geared Towards Innovative STEM Curriculum

November 11, 2023 | Kayla Anderson

What first struck me about Incline Elementary School when I pulled up to the building is how a well-dressed man greeted every car, opening the door for the student and watching to make sure they made it safely inside, like a high-end valet service. (I would later learn that the man who welcomed the students was Principal John Stern.)

After his morning announcement to all students, Stern whisks us into Trina Kleinhenz’s classroom, otherwise known as the Makerspace. In these classes, “Ms. Trina” as her students call her, brings Gifted & Talented strategies to all students through project-based learning, development of critical thinking skills, discussions, and hands-on/self-directed activities. She collaborates with other teachers to create cross-curricular projects, including computer science and coding robots. While still in elementary school, students are learning to perform specific tasks in engineering design and by offering these programs to all students, the school district is promoting equity and diversity in the field of computer science beginning early in their academic careers.

Spread Warmth and Cheer with the Incline Village Library’s Giving Tree!

November 9, 2023 | Member Submitted

This holiday season, join us in a heartwarming collaboration with Sierra Community House to make a difference in the lives of those in need. The Incline Village Giving Tree is adorned with the spirit of generosity, and we invite you to be a part of this joyous initiative.

Embrace the true meaning of the season by contributing to our tree’s festive display. We’re seeking new, not used, donations of warmth and comfort – gloves, scarves, mittens, socks, and beanies – to adorn the tree and provide essential winter essentials for our community members. Additionally, gift cards and cans of soup will add an extra touch of care to those in need. Donations will be given to Sierra Community House for distribution.

Your participation can make a world of difference to someone facing the chill of winter. Let’s come together to create a canopy of compassion on the Incline Village Library Giving Tree. Your kindness will not only warm hearts but also ensure that everyone in our community experiences the magic of the season.

Drop by during the library’s normal business hours beginning December 1st – 20th and help us turn the Incline Village Library’s Giving Tree into a symbol of love, warmth, and community spirit. Let the spirit of giving shine bright this holiday season!

November 8, 2023 | Mary Danahey

INCLINE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL:

KOLO 8 came to Incline Elementary School last week to film a story about the successful IES Makerspace.

This exciting program is getting recognition throughout the district!  It’s a great model for providing STEM education at the elementary school level and preparing ALL students for a solid foundation.

Here’s a link to the NEWS CLIP >

INCLINE MIDDLE SCHOOL:

The “Trash to Treasure” was a great success as students, Rotarians, AAUW members, and local community members collected almost 500 lbs of trash.  The middle school jazz band kept everyone entertained, and the Junior Boosters hosted a free BBQ.

INCLINE HIGH SCHOOL:
Over 200 students, parents, faculty, and community members attended the IHS Dia de los Muertos Celebration on November 1st, which Boosters and Mi Cultura sponsored. The event was a celebration of the Day of the Dead that showcased a community-made altar as well as traditional decorations, chocolate calaveritas, and pan de muerto. The community enjoyed the over 450 homemade tamales and hot chocolate and the good laughs and camaraderie brought on by the Loteria (bingo) games that earned them fantastic prizes.

Don’t forget the Governor Designated Stem School Open House is Wednesday, 11/08!

The Local Lens – Northern Lights Starts This Weekend!

November 8, 2023 | Linda Offerdahl

I want to give a shout-out to our schools’ STEM designation with the State of Nevada. Tonight, an open house for the numerous programs, including the engineering classes and ‘We The People’ constitutional debate program, that qualified them to be a STEM school. Please go and celebrate academics in this rare chance to see our high schoolers showing off their talents and the school.  Incline Elementary School is getting local recognition in the news for its Makers Space program. And not to be left out, the Incline Middle School is working on its STEM designation this year. The robotics class and their “Trash to Treasure” campaign last weekend are two examples. I can’t wait to see what sculpture they create with all that trash!

PINENUTS – Our Huckleberry Hero

November 8, 2023 | McAvoy Lane

Most friends who have visited Layne Haven over the past six years have met my pet Jay, Huckleberry. He stops by three times a day, 8am for breakfast, noon for lunch, and 5pm for Happy Hour, when he gets a Beer Nut. Huckleberry has been my constant companion since 2017 when he was hatched right here on the second deck. I spread a sleeping bag out on the drive below when he fledged. He hit it dead center and looked up at me as if to say, “Thanks, Pal.” We’ve been fast friends ever since…

If I sleep-in, Huck will bang on the window with his beak as if to say, “Hey, let’s get some breakfast going out here!” He has even gone so far as to fake his own death to get my attention. Then he jumps up as if to ask, “Got any Beer Nuts on you?!”

Over the years Huck has learned English and a smattering of Spanish that he has picked up from the neighbors. So yesterday I sat down to have a father – son talk with Huck…

“Huckleberry, now is the time for all good jays to come to the aid of their planet. You are destined to become the world’s first feathered Superhero, now let me tell you how…

I am going to band you with a global positioning device that will guide you to the windowsill of the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, where you will flop onto your back and fake your own death, like you are prone to do. Your legs will be banded with the words, ‘CLIMATE’ on one leg, and ‘PEACE’ on the other.

I shall alert Secretary General Guterres that you will be coming, and ask him to take a photo of your petition for the world to embrace, ‘PEACE’ and ‘CLIMATE!’ The Secretary’s photo will circle the globe to capture hearts and minds the world over. Peoples from Fairbanks in Alaska, to Antarctica’s Union Glacier Camp will wake up and take notice.”

They will ask, “If a Nevada Jay can be aware of the perils that we all face, who are we to ignore this feathered friend called, Huckleberry?” World peace and a cleansing of the atmosphere are sure to follow.

“Secretary Guterres will disband you, Huck, and you should have no trouble finding your way back to Layne Haven, where your girlfriend, Emmeline, and I, will be eagerly awaiting your return.”

In closing, Nevada’s premier artist, Steven Saylor and I are collaborating on a book to chronicle Huck’s heroic adventures. We’re calling it, Our Huckleberry Hero, to be available soon wherever books are sold, and I promise the gentle reader, you will want to frame Steven’s illustrations.

Of all the superheroes the world has ever known, who in God’s Green Acre could turn a cold shoulder to a Sierra Nevada Jay named Huckleberry? Heck, I might even wash and peel two Beer Nuts to welcome Huckleberry back home…

Embrace the Spirit of GivingTuesday: Give Locally

November 7, 2023 | Julie Malkin-Manning

GivingTuesday is more than just a date on the calendar; it’s a global movement that encourages radical generosity. Created in 2012 with a simple idea in mind, it has since evolved into a year-round initiative inspiring millions worldwide to give, collaborate, and celebrate the power of generosity.

We invite you to join this impactful movement, not just on Tuesdays, but every day of the year. Whether you offer your time, make a donation, or use your voice to support your local community, your acts of kindness matter. Every gesture, no matter how big or small, contributes to the better world we all want to live in.

For many nonprofits, the holiday season is a time for receiving donations, and Giving Tuesday in November stands out as a pivotal day for raising funds.

As we enter the season of joy and sharing, IVCBA encourages you to think locally and embrace the spirit of giving. Caring for our neighbors and practicing generosity are core values of the community we are building together.

One organization that exemplifies this philosophy is the Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation, often described as the “umbrella” organization for nonprofits. Claudia Andersen, the CEO, expresses their mission eloquently: “For over 25 years, Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation has been dedicated to nurturing community philanthropy by connecting donors with causes that truly matter. We urge our community to be generous in supporting our hardworking non-profit organizations, not just during the giving season, but throughout the entire year. Together, we can enhance and preserve the quality of life in this beautiful place we call home.”

To discover and support the nonprofits in the Tahoe Basin, visit TahoeGives.org. Embrace the spirit of GivingTuesday, give locally, and make a positive impact on your community during this season of giving and beyond.

In The News – United for Action discusses violence prevention, Toys for Tots, Thanksgiving at October meeting

November 7, 2023 | Kayla Anderson

Originally Published in The Tahoe Daily Tribune 11/03/2023, Written by Kayla Anderson

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. – One of the main virtues of most faith-based organizations in North Lake Tahoe is to “love thy neighbor”, and a lot of work goes into helping community members in need. United for Action is a North Lake Tahoe/Truckee community coalition of local activists and faith-based congregations who collaborate with other nonprofits, family resource centers, governments, health agencies, and more to foster peace and elevate the quality of life for everyone in Lake Tahoe.

While there is a lot of discussion at every meeting trying to find solutions for the housing and homelessness problem in the area (United for Action made that a primary focus for the years 2021-23), the October meeting also covered topics such as the recent Winter Warmth & Wellness event; the upcoming Toys for Tots initiative; the 2023 community Thanksgiving dinner; the Sierra Community House’s violence prevention/youth empowerment efforts; and more.
