In The News – ‘Not just a ski shuttle’: First electric flying ferry in U.S. hopes to cut commutes for Tahoe locals, increase business across shores

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Local company FlyTahoe is pairing with Swedish tech company Candela to bring the first electric flying ferry to the shores of Lake Tahoe. CEO and founder of FlyTahoe Ryan Meinzer anticipates the unique vessel to start business at the end of 2025, but has high hopes for the impacts the Candela P-12 will bring to the Basin.

Meinzer, a self-proclaimed snowboard fanatic and entrepreneur, said, “Tahoe is my favorite place on the planet.” And for the past 15 years, he says he’s seen issues in transit and traffic throughout the Tahoe basin that impact not only commutes, but the clarity of the lake. “I’ve been thinking about solving this problem for a long time.”

Now, he feels the cutting-edge technology that Candela creates makes that solution a reality. “The hydrofoil technology lowers operational expenses and makes this a profitable enterprise. It’s a rare opportunity to be able to combine purpose and profit like this,” said Meinzer.

The Local Lens – Gratitude… Tis the Season!

November 27, 2024 | Linda Offerdahl

So much to be grateful for this season, but I want to focus on those that address food insecurity in our community…

  • Sierra Community House and its many volunteers who made sure that goody bags, complete with a turkey, reached homes throughout North Tahoe/Truckee, including Incline.
  • The Village Church with its always on hand food boxes, St. Frances with its Food Ministry, and St. Patrick’s and Cornerstone who serve many families in need.
  • Food Bank of Northern Nevada works behind the scenes by being a major supplier for Sierra Community House, and Raleys and Grocery Outlet donates surplus food.

SHOP SMALL SATURDAY

After the mobs of shoppers in Reno on Black Friday, chill out on Saturday and keep it local!

High Sierra Gardens….The place to get a fresh Christmas tree and their gift shop is still open!

The Potlatch…Go for the jewelry at 10% off, but those cutesy holiday hostess gifts sell out early and their selection is the BEST!

Karacotta Ceramic Studio…is offering an ornament-making workshop

Mountain Hardware and Sports….make it a family experience…something for everyone… DIY guys, affordable sports clothing for kids, holiday and housewares, and Christmas lights!

The Village Ski Loft…all those brands you love…either make someone happy or make your own list!

Not a shopper? Don’t feel bad, go visit one of the newest businesses in town, Iron and Wood in Country Club Center. Yes, it’s a golf place, kind of like TopGolf where everyone can hang out and spend a few hours bonding over your golf swing. They encourage bring drinks and food over from nearby Fumo, Austin’s, Incline Spirits, and Bak’d.

GIVING TUESDAY

This is your chance to give to the myriad non-profits that make our community so supportive. Whether it’s the family advocacy organizations like the ones mentioned above and Tahoe Family Solutions, Incline Education Fund for the schools, or Shakespeare and the many cultural non-proifts, BE GENEROUS!

Whose Wheels Will Come Off?

Written and Submitted By David Vomund

Today the five largest U.S. companies are all in the technology sector.  That wasn’t the case in the 1980s.  Back then there was IBM and everyone else.  IBM’s market capitalization was larger than all other companies, not just tech stocks.  It was deemed so secure that at one point its bonds yielded less than U.S. Treasuries!  IBM was untouchable … until it wasn’t.

Sticking with the 1980s, the ten largest stocks included AT&T and Eastman Kodak.  These, too, seemed untouchable but eventually succumbed to competition.

In the 1990s all but two of the largest worldwide companies were Japanese.  Many in our country feared Japan’s economy would surpass our own.  Not so fast.

In 2000 the second largest company was General Electric.  Twenty-four years later GE’s market-cap still hasn’t recovered from that peak.  Cisco Systems was the third largest and it, too, is below its 2000 high.  AIG was the 14th largest company.  It required a government bailout.

By 2010 Exxon Mobil and Microsoft topped the list of largest companies and both are still doing well.  But that list also included Intel, a company whose stock has fallen 70 percent since 2021 and is near its 2010 level.

What’s my point?  In each of these time periods investors expected continued dominance from the largest companies.  It was inconceivable that their fates would sour.  But in every historical list there were some companies whose fortunes turned south.  Investors loved Eastman Kodak’s film dominance until the digital camera arrived.  AIG was a financial powerhouse until the financial crisis.

Even Microsoft, which has remained in the list of largest companies for several decades and is the third largest company today, went sideways for 15 years after the internet bubble burst.  They whiffed on the smart phone and promoted Windows Vista.  Ugh.

Although it seems inconceivable now, there will be a couple of losers on today’s list of largest companies (Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta Platforms, Tesla, Berkshire Hathaway, Broadcom, and Eli Lilly).  Nvidia dominates the AI chip market but others want a slice of that pie.  Apple’s products are known for their unique design and user experience but its profits are only growing about five percent.  Tesla investors believe in ambitious plans of its charismatic CEO.  Which the ten will falter?

As an investor, one shouldn’t look at how companies are doing now because they are all doing well.  The key is to anticipate their future.  Given history, one or two of today’s largest and most successful companies won’t remain dominant.

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. – Incline High School stands out for having almost all its students cross the stage to graduate in 2024.

“I am encouraged by last year’s graduation rate of 98.67%, which reflects the hard work and commitment of our students, families, and staff,” said Incline High Principal Tierney Cahill. “However, I remain mindful that the remaining 1.33% represents more than just a statistic, it represents individual stories, often shaped by complex challenges such as relocation or personal circumstances.”

Incline High had 98.67% graduation rate for 2023-2024 school year, a 3.32% increase over the previous year, according to newly released Washoe County School District (WCSD) statistics.

In The News – Can Crystal Bay Shine Once Again?

November 26, 2024 | Member Submitted

Originally Published in Moonshine Ink, 11/14/2024, Written by Melissa Siig

The small Tahoe enclave has seen better days. Can the redevelopment of the Cal Neva and Biltmore return the area to its former glory?

Charlie Soule has owned The Soule Domain restaurant at the western entrance to Crystal Bay for 40 years. In that time, he has watched the small casino corridor go from a vibrant neighborhood full of shops, restaurants, and a bustling nightlife to an area with boarded-up and dilapidated buildings and empty parking lots littered with trash. Out of the three anchor businesses in Crystal Bay — the Crystal Bay Club, Tahoe Biltmore, and Cal Neva — two have been closed for several years: the Cal Neva since 2013 and the Biltmore since 2022. Just to the west of The Soule Domain, another derelict building, the Tahoe Inn, has been sitting empty for almost 10 years.

“Right now, and I’ve been here a long time, the neighborhood sucks,” Soule said. “It’s about as bad as it’s ever been.”

The tiny neighborhood of Crystal Bay, which abuts the California-Nevada border and straddles Highway 28, presents a strange dichotomy.

Embrace the Spirit of Giving Tuesday: Give Locally

November 26, 2024 | Julie Malkin-Manning

GivingTuesday is more than just a date; it’s a global movement rooted in the transformative power of generosity. Since its inception in 2012, this initiative has grown beyond a single day, inspiring millions to give, collaborate, and celebrate kindness throughout the year.

This GivingTuesday, we invite you to take part in this movement—not just on the designated day but as a daily practice. Whether you volunteer your time, make a financial contribution, or amplify the voices of local nonprofits, every act of kindness creates ripples of positive change. Remember, no gesture is too small; each one contributes to building a better, more compassionate world.

For many nonprofits, the holiday season is a critical time for fundraising. GivingTuesday serves as a focal point, providing an opportunity for communities to rally around local causes and organizations. As we enter this season of gratitude and generosity, we encourage you to think locally and embrace the spirit of giving. Supporting our neighbors and strengthening our community through generosity are values that unite us all.

One organization championing this mission is the Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation, often regarded as the “umbrella” organization for nonprofits in our region. CEO Claudia Andersen encapsulates their purpose beautifully:

“For over 25 years, Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation has been dedicated to nurturing community philanthropy by connecting donors with causes that truly matter. We urge our community to be generous in supporting our hardworking non-profit organizations, not just during the giving season, but throughout the entire year. Together, we can enhance and preserve the quality of life in this beautiful place we call home.”

Discover how you can support nonprofits across the Tahoe Basin by visiting TahoeGives.org.

This GivingTuesday, let’s prioritize giving locally. Your contributions, no matter the form, make a meaningful impact on our community. Together, we can create a season—and a world—filled with generosity and care.
