In The News – NDOT prepares to keep drivers safe, connected during winter weather

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – Now that winter weather has hit northern Nevada, the Nevada Department of Transportation reminds drivers to travel safely and avoid unnecessary trips during inclement weather.

Statewide, nearly 4,000 crashes occurred in inclement weather between Oct. 1, 2022 and April 30, 2023. This includes 22 crashes involving fatalities. Many of the crashes were due to unsafe driving in snow, ice and other wet conditions, such as driving too fast for conditions, following too closely, or failing to maintain a lane and overcorrecting.

Particularly in winter weather, motorists are reminded to drive slowly for conditions and leave space between their vehicle and others. Wearing a seat belt and focusing on the road are other important driving tips for any type of weather.

Bull or Bear?

November 7, 2023 | Member Submitted

Written and Submitted By David Vomund

While that question is just semantics, the technical definition (a 20 percent or greater move) points to a bull market.  The S&P 500 is 21 percent above its October 2022 low and is up 13 percent this year.  But the S&P 500 is overstating the strength of most stocks, which is why others call it a bear market.  I find it encouraging when I hear the bear label.  Such skepticism is good for stocks.

I keep saying that investing is all about earnings and interest rates.  The news on the earnings front has been good.  For the most part Corporate America is doing well as we saw in the initial number for third quarter GDP.  But the Treasury needs to sell $1.7 trillion in new debt over six months. To whom and at what cost?  Buyers, overwhelmed by the new offerings of $1.7 trillion, may demand higher rates.  That alone would put upward pressure on rates no matter what the Fed is doing.  Clearly, the Treasury should have issued long-term bonds when interest rates were near zero.

Inflation, the ultimate enemy of financial assets, remains on a slow downward path.  While core inflation (ex food and energy) is less than four percent year over year, excluding food and energy is why people feel that prices are rising faster than they are being told. The inflation rate for food and energy alone is more than six percent.  Shoppers and drivers know it.

Investors in stocks most sensitive to the economy are saying there are ample signs that the economy is softening, including September’s employment report.  UPS and FedEx see it in demands for delivery.  MasterCard and Visa see it in the number and dollar amount of transactions and credit patterns.  That is why stocks fell for three straight months.  The good news is that November is the market’s strongest month (since 1950) and December is number three.  After the down summer there should be better days ahead and a year-end rally.

One last point.  Stocks and bonds both rallied big time last week with little in the way of news.  One can’t wait for better data and headline news — an all-clear signal before acting.  One needs to anticipate…and be right.  As the late Joe Granville once said, “If it’s obvious, it’s obviously wrong.”  Indeed.  Investors are anticipating rate cuts and earnings growth.  They’ll be right, but when?  Soon would be nice.

In The News – Good News: Local Students Create Defensible Space for Couple in Need

On Oct. 11, learning for local elementary school students took place in the Sierra Nevada forest, and their hands-on, hard-work lesson would bring tears to the eyes of the adults who helped guide them. It was Defensible Space Stewardship Day, and the Truckee Fire Protection District, Sierra Watershed Education Partnerships (SWEP), and students from Donner Trail Elementary School joined together to reduce the threat of wildfires and help community members in need.

The combined team assisted in clearing fuel ladders and lodgepole pines at a property in Emigrant Gap. The goal was to help Hank and Dee Dee Goodrich, an elderly couple living in a mountain cabin, who couldn’t create defensible space on their own because of health concerns and limited resources.

Creating Lasting Connections: Compass’s Commitment to Incline Village’s Community and Real Estate Dreams

November 6, 2023 | Member Submitted

No one expected a dreadlocked fifteen-year-old who cared more about his DJ business than his homework to grow up to become one of the youngest-ever White House fellows, create multiple nonprofits, and found a multibillion-dollar company. But Robert Reffkin — raised by an Israeli immigrant single mother, disowned by his maternal grandparents for being Black, and abandoned by his father — has always defied the odds.

In 2012, Robert Reffkin co-founded the online real estate technology company Compass, Inc. with Ori Allon. The inspiration for his business came from his mother, who suffered hardships working as a real estate agent. Reffkin was inspired to use technology to improve the ability of agents to build their brand, analyze data, and conduct market research to make their business more efficient and profitable.

In a testament to Compass’s rapid growth, the renowned real estate brokerage has recently acquired a foothold in the stunning Lake Tahoe region. In 2021, the highly anticipated opening of the Incline Village office introduced cutting-edge technology to this market, all in pursuit of the shared mission to help individuals discover their perfect place in the world.

With the launch of the Compass office in Incline Village, a vibrant and close-knit community, our team is committed to providing unwavering support and expertise to residents seeking their dream homes. Tracy Cohn, an accomplished Sales Manager and Nevada Broker of Record, proudly leads this office and envisions a future where the local business flourishes, contributing to the overall prosperity of the Incline Village community.

At Compass, we believe that finding the right home is more than just a transaction – it’s an opportunity to create a lasting connection with the community. We are thrilled to be a part of Incline Village’s journey, assisting individuals and families with their real estate needs and actively engaging in community initiatives. Together, let’s build a brighter future, one home at a time.

PINE NUTS – Pumpkin Man

November 3, 2023 | McAvoy Lane

Huckleberry & Jim had many a grand adventure aboard their raft, adventures that we can read all about in Mark Twain’s iconic book, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. But who would ever guess a Missouri man, Steve Kueny, could grow a 1,280-pound pumpkin, hollow it out, climb inside, and float 39 miles down the Missouri River inside a pumpkin he just happened to name, “Huckle Berry.”

It took Steve eleven hours to complete his journey from Kansas City to Napoleon, and place his name on a page in the Guinness Book of World Records. Mind you, this record is not your grandfather’s, “Hold my beer…watch this!” No, there was much planning, tender loving care, careful carving and much paddling involved, not to mention the annoyance of pumpkin hairs tickling his toes for eleven grueling hours.

Kueny claims he was just a man with a pumpkin who was looking for something to do on a Monday morning. But we know he was a man with a mission, and we congratulate him for his creativity and endurance. After all, Missouri is the “Show Me State.” As for Huckle Berry? He was unceremoniously decommissioned, which is to say, run over by a tractor.”

Reading about Steve’s adventure gave me an incentive to go back and reread Cinderella, as she too took a ride in a pumpkin as I recall. Cinderella’s fairy grandmother turned a pumpkin into a golden carriage and turned mice into horses to pull that pumpkin to the prince’s ball. She even turned a rat into a coachman. Don’t ask me how.

But if Cinderella did not leave before midnight, well, that golden carriage would revert to a regular old pumpkin in which to ride home, and I still don’t know how Cinderella got home that night. Did the mice carry her back home in her pumpkin, or did she just call Uber…

If there is a moral to that fairytale I could not find it with a hunting dog, but others more learned than I have suggested that the moral of the Cinderella story is, “Where beauty is a treasure, graciousness is priceless.” So let us go with that, and let it ride.

I had a chance once myself at a world record, and feel the sting of regret even today that I did not make it into that noble book. Yes, back in high school I was carried off the field on a gurney twice in one football game. One more time and I might have landed in the Guinness Book of World Records. I wasn’t hurt, actually, so much as I was really really tired, and, yearning for the sympathy of one of our cheerleaders, who did cross herself when she suspected I must surely be dead on my second exodus on that gurney.

Oh well, the day is young, and we never know when providence might offer an opportunity to earn oneself a mention in the Guinness Book of World Records…

“Hold my beer…watch this!”

The Local Lens – How do we HEAL our Community?

November 1, 2023 | Linda Offerdahl

Do we have more than our fair share of conflict in this little village? I don’t know. But right now, IVCBA’s mission of “building cohesiveness for the sustainability of Incline Village and Crystal Bay” seems even more difficult. For those of us who want a thriving community, how do we move forward when there seem to be so many contentious issues, rigid positions, and sides taken that don’t leave room for compromise…and how do we trust that our government and agencies are looking out for our best interests when we can’t agree on what those best interests are?! I applaud those in our community who work tirelessly on issues and work to make Incline a better place. But it’s time to take a pause and remember that we are in a small village, and life is better if we try to get along or at least be tolerant.

Whether it’s from a religious book, lessons taught by your parents, ethics classes in college, or what you learned in kindergarten, can we apply those principles to working together and healing our community? Here’s my best collection of truisms from Richard’s mother, among others, that all hold more than one grain of truth.

  • You catch more flies with honey than vinegar.
  • If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.
  • You don’t learn anything when you are talking.
  • Never compromise your integrity.
  • To err is human; to forgive is sublime.

And last, Be generous, with your time, talent, and treasure…from Carla Hanson, the “Mother Theresa” of Incline Village who started the Parasol Foundation, along with Warren Trepp and others.

Sometimes this is awkward, but IVCBA works hard to maintain a neutral position on issues. Our 270 members all have different opinions. We advocate for more information and more interaction to discern what an issue is about and how it will affect our community. We support the governments in power and recognize that elections give us the opportunity to make changes when we are not happy with the direction that the government is taking. We are about “building community” and sometimes that means change. And no one likes changes. As the old saw goes, I’m all for progress, it’s change, it’s change I can’t stand.

Here’s what IVCBA does to Build Community:

  • Support and promote our agencies, businesses, and nonprofits.
  • Provide information through a community website, IVCBA.org, SnapShot, and Live.Work.Play.
  • Organize community-wide events, like the upcoming Northern Lights Celebration.
  • Convene people and encourage education and positive interactions.
  • Turn on the holiday lights!

If you share our vision of a thriving community that supports, and is supported by, our agencies, businesses, and nonprofits, won’t you please join as a Community Supporter for $50? Go to www.ivcba.org.
