In The News – TRPA Releases Draft Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan

March 8, 2024 | Member Submitted

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency is encouraging public review and feedback on key transportation plans to improve Lake Tahoe’s bicycle and pedestrian system and encourage public involvement in transportation improvements. The Active Transportation Plan focuses on connecting all methods of travel that do not rely entirely on a car, like walking, biking, and rolling.

Transportation impacts are the leading source of greenhouse gas emissions globally and a major source of nitrogen pollutants at Lake Tahoe. Excess nitrogen feeds the growth of algae and harms the lake’s famed clarity. Reducing vehicle use and improving safety in the Tahoe Basin is a top priority for TRPA, communities, and partner agencies, according to the agency.

The Local Lens – Snowed In

March 6, 2024 | Linda Offerdahl

BENEFITS OF BEING SNOWED IN

I love love love the big storms. This last one, a true blizzard, reminded me of Minnesota storms on steroids! I know they create hazardous situations for many, and I really advocate just staying home for that reason. Thank you to the Incline Substation deputies and personnel, along with North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District, and all our snowplow drivers for the hard work they did keeping us safe in the blizzard. Personally, I love that storms allow people like me, “who do too much,” to take a break, recover from a cold, do some housework, read, and watch TV with my husband, Richard. But I also love how it brings neighbors together, helping each other with shoveling, sharing meals, etc. And let’s just see if our population increases in the next 9 months….

UPCOMING:

Sam Choy, the chef at Bowl Incline, is in town and has lots of stuff going on at “The Bowl”. BUT, he is also in the Snowfest Parade on Saturday in Kings Beach! Lots of fabulous activities going on through this weekend.

Tahoe Talks at Incline Library next Tuesday….on civil discourse, boring but important so that public meetings don’t become too exciting.

IHS  Boosters CrabFeed is on Saturday, March 16…. It’s a cowboy theme this year!

WHAT TO LOOK FORWARD TO

Two popular events are coming back to Incline!

Incline Star Follies on May 3-4… a community show fundraiser for Incline schools. If you moved to Incline in the last 5 years, don’t miss this show! And NO ONE needs talent to be in it! This is the best event to bring UNITY into COMMUNITY, with kids from the schools getting on stage with residents and school personnel.

Incline Village Crystal Bay Restaurant Week: April 15-21 – Join the first annual event and support our restaurants in the shoulder season!

Breaking News – Congratulations to Amelia Galicia, new Incline Village Patrol Captain.

In The News – Recent storm ‘among strongest on record’; pushes Tahoe snowpack above 100%

March 6, 2024 | Member Submitted

Originally Published in the Tahoe Daily Tribune, 03/06/2024, Submitted

GREATER LAKE TAHOE AREA, Calif./Nev. – The approximately four-day storm that started on leap day provided enough snow to push area snowpacks just above normal for the first time this winter. The storm outranked all four-day storms since 1981, with only three having a higher four day gain than this blizzard.

“Over the years there have certainly been longer duration events or back-to-back storms that caused far greater snow water increases,” but the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service explains the rate of increase over just four days indicates the storm intensity for this blizzard “was among the strongest on record.”

It pushed the Lake Tahoe Basin snowpack to 101% of the median, and Truckee Basin to 105%. These snowpacks in the eastern Sierras have come a long way since the 44% pack on Jan. 1, the sixth lowest for that date since 1981, but the service says it still has a small ways to go to reach normal spring time peaks.

In The News – Unlocking Tahoe’s dirty secret: Data from a multiyear monitoring project

March 6, 2024 | Member Submitted

Originally Published in the Tahoe Daily Tribune 03/05/24, Submitted

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. – Clean Up The Lake, the environmental non-profit responsible for the 72-mile cleanup of Lake Tahoe, has recently completed a two-year monitoring effort on the lake. CUTL conservation dive teams revisited 20 litter hotspots in the 0 to 25-foot depths along the Nevada shoreline that were identified during the 72-mile cleanup of Lake Tahoe in 2021.

The primary purpose of this project was to survey these nearshore zones along the Nevada shoreline to observe changes in litter accumulation and perform surveillance for aquatic invasive species (AIS) that may have progressed since 2021. By revisiting places that were already cleaned, the data collected helped determine the status of litter accumulation in Lake Tahoe, its rate of change since the 72-mile cleanup, and the efficacy of CUTL!s SCUBA-enabled cleanup methodology.

A secondary purpose of this monitoring project was to perform 40 additional deep dive surveys between the 35 and 70-foot depths near each hot spot location to better assess litter loads and AIS at deeper depths.

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. – Incline Middle School’s seasoned principal shared the top job on Thursday with a NV Energy executive as part of “Principal for a Day” program sponsored by the Education Alliance of Washoe County.

“I got to experience the life of a principal in a small school,” said Craig Rosen, NV Energy Senior Project Manager Education and Outreach. “I got to really see his interaction with teachers, faculty and students. He high fives every student, and he know them by name. You can tell he truly cares about his students.”

Rosen spent the morning with Principal Dan Lediard to experience what it is like to be a principal or administrator in the Washoe County School District, and learn about the more than 60,000 students these schools serve.

Mental Telegraphy – What Would Mark Twain Say?

February 29, 2024 | McAvoy Lane

Have you ever thought that maybe you had special powers but did not know how to tap into them? Well you do. We all do, some to a greater extent than others, and Mark Twain was one of the most gifted of all vision-seers. He was in tune to the possibility of two or more people transmitting the same idea back and forth…

“The world was without an electric telegraph for several thousand years; then Professor Henry, the American, Wheatstone in England, Morse on the sea, and a German in Munich, all invented it at the same time.”

And now, Elon Musk says Neuralink’s first human patient is able to control a computer’s mouse through thinking.

The strangest thing that has ever befallen me took place inside the Clemens home in Hartford. We were shooting a documentary, and while they were setting up the lighting in the billiards room I wandered aimlessly through the rest of that beautiful domicile.

As I was about to enter a downstairs bedroom, and was reaching for the doorknob, my hand instinctively withdrew, without my knowing why. I would learn, that was the room where Susy died, his daughter of 24 years of age, his light that went out. My hand knew I did not want to enter that room, when my head hadn’t a clue. I attribute that phenomenon to his guiding hand, not mine.

Mark Twain examined the ephemeral science of mental telegraphy in an essay he published in 1878…

“When it was three in the morning in Nevada it was six in Hartford, where I lay awake thinking about nothing in particular; and just about that time his ideas came pouring into my head from across the continent, and I got up and put them on paper, under the impression that they were my own original thoughts. I am forced to believe that one human mind can communicate with another, over any sort of distance.”

According to Twain, there are no coincidences, merely instances of mental telegraphy that go unexplained. And so we often hear the common expression, “I was just thinking about you!”

Twain goes on to extrapolate, “The telegraph and telephone are going to become too slow for our needs. We must have the thought itself shot into our minds from a distance. Doubtless the thing which conveys our thoughts through the air from brain to brain is a finer and subtler form of electricity, and all we need do is find out how to capture it.”

So yes, there are gifted vision-seers. I’m not one, but I believe Mark Twain was one.

As is our custom, we shall leave the last word to Mr. Twain…

“Thirty yoke of oxen could not have pulled the belief out of me that I was one of the favored ones of the earth, and had seen a vision while wide awake.”
