The Local Lens – Incline Village Crystal Bay Restaurant Week

April 3, 2024 | Julie Malkin-Manning

Guest Author: Julie Malkin-Manning, IVCBA Community Events Manager

The countdown has begun and I couldn’t be more excited about the upcoming inaugural Incline Village Crystal Bay Restaurant Week – April 15 – 21.

You know that person who is always thinking about their next meal, even while eating their current meal? The one who reads the menu days before the reservation? That friend that always has a recommendation for where and what to eat/drink? Yeah, that’s me…

It all started with a simple idea — to celebrate the diverse culinary landscape of our community in a way that’s never been done before. Living in this vibrant community, I’ve been continuously inspired by the flavors and culinary talents that grace our small village. From cozy cafes to upscale dining destinations boasting world-class chefs, our food and beverage scene is nothing short of extraordinary. And as IVCBA’s Community Events Manager, I saw the opportunity to create IVCB Restaurant Week.

And that’s precisely why IVCB Restaurant Week was born—a week-long celebration dedicated to showcasing our local eateries, inviting our community to embark on a culinary adventure. It’s about more than just indulging in delicious food (though that’s certainly a delightful perk); it’s about coming together as a community and supporting the local businesses that define us as Incline Village and Crystal Bay.

But we’re not just celebrating the culinary delights that await us—we’re also celebrating the spirit of unity and connection that comes with breaking bread and clinking glasses together. IVCB Restaurant Week isn’t just an event—it’s a celebration of the flavors and venues that make our community special, and I couldn’t be prouder to have played a part in its creation.

So, mark your calendars, spread the word, and get ready to embark on a culinary journey like no other. IVCB Restaurant Week is coming, and it’s going to be an experience you won’t want to miss.

Lisa Lewis Visits Lake Tahoe School

April 3, 2024 | Member Submitted

Written by Artyom Zhakov, 7th grade journalism for Lake Tahoe School newspaper

Everyone knows that sleep is a crucial part of life, but according to Lisa Lewis, you may be doing it wrong. Lisa Lewis, sleep expert and journalist, gave a presentation about sleep to Lake Tahoe School parents and students on March 21, 2024.

A survey of the Lake Tahoe School 7th and 8th graders showed that almost one-third of students are getting less than 8 hours of sleep. However, the APA recommends that children from 7-13 years old get at least 9 hours of sleep, and 14-18 year olds should get at least 8 hours of sleep.

Do you get enough sleep given this range? Having less sleep than this can lead to worse memory causing bad performance in school, reduce reaction time and coordination leading to bad performance or injury while playing sports, and overall lowers your mood. Lisa Lewis’s goal was to help these sleep issues by teaching us how to get better sleep.

When the Lake Tahoe School Press interviewed Ms. Lewis, she told us that the single most important change you can make to your sleeping routine involves your phone and other digital devices. First, according to her research, digital devices should not be used within an hour of sleep. When it is time to sleep, there should be no digital devices in your room unless absolutely necessary. This comes down to three reasons: Being on your phone distracts you from sleep, it can ‘rev’ you up making it harder to fall asleep, and it exposes you to blue light, lowering your sleep hormone melatonin. Hopefully, Lisa Lewis’s visit will bring sleep and smiles to Lake Tahoe School.

In The News – Sierra Community House: Uniting for a holistic approach to combat domestic, sexual violence

Five years ago, the decision to merge four local core service organizations – Project MANA, North Tahoe Family Resource Center, Family Resource Center of Truckee, and Tahoe Safe Alliance – was unprecedented and initially met with skepticism. This strategic merger aimed to streamline and enhance service delivery by addressing overlapping services in the community, ultimately resulting in the Sierra Community House (SCH).

It proved to be a successful endeavor, eliminating confusion, inefficiencies, and retraumatization that individuals faced while navigating multiple services before the merger. By consolidating resources under one roof, SCH made essential services easily accessible in a single location.

Firefighters breathe easier thanks to a $1.7 million FEMA grant that replaced outdated breathing equipment

April 2, 2024 | Member Submitted

Submitted by Tia Rancourt of North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District (NLTFPD)

Thanks to a $1.7 million grant from FEMA’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant program, Carson City, Tahoe Douglas, East Fork, Smith Valley, and North Lake Tahoe Fire Districts all have new, state-of-the-art Scott X3 PRO self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).

These SCBAs, essential for protecting firefighters in hazardous environments, were nearing the end of their lifespan. The new Scott X3 PRO models offer the latest safety features, ensuring better protection for our firefighters who risk their lives for our communities.

This grant, administered by the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District (NLTFPD), fostered regional cooperation, with all five fire departments now using the same equipment, enabling seamless collaboration, communication, and interoperability during joint operations across county lines.

The North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District extends its thanks to FEMA and the participating fire departments for their collaboration over the last 17 months in securing and implementing this grant.

“Big thanks go to FEMA and all the participating fire districts for making this vital upgrade possible. Regional cooperation is key, and this project is a shining example of that principle in action,” said NLTFPD Fire Chief Ryan Sommers.
