Pine Nuts – America’s Pastime

October 13, 2024 | McAvoy Lane

Don’t you love October baseball? Me too! It might not be America’s pastime anymore, but this time of year it feels good to hear the crack of the bat and the slap of the glove. I learned to love the game while playing shortstop in Little League. My nickname was, “Tennis Shoe Ernie,” because my feet were so gal-darn big, ground balls always clipped my tennis shoe, then hit me in the chin. I never got anybody out, and parents in the stands took to laughing at me when I started taking to the field wearing a chinstrap. So I feel for today’s hapless White Sox…

In setting an all-time losing record for a season, this year’s Chicago White Sox even managed to hit their catcher in the groin with the ball three times in one inning. My chin doesn’t feel so bad anymore, and I imagine that particular White Sux catcher is looking for work as a Door-to-Door Fuller Brush salesman in Hawaii…

Mark Twain would remember the 1899 Cleveland Spiders. They hold the overall record for losses in the National League with a dreadful 20-134 record. The Spiders won just one of their final 41 games, and their faithful fans in the stands for that one win, were so full of Hazy Wife IPA, that they forgot to applaud…One steadfast fan was heard to say as he was leaving the Spiders’ stadium, “We could volunteer at a funeral home, it would be just as fun!”

I suppose I might someday end up in the Guinness Book of Worst Records myself for being the only clown diver to miss the pool from the three-meter diving board, and walk away smiling. As of this writing I have been disqualified for using the one-meter board along the way. Yes, while still in high school I leaped from the high diving board to the low diving board, intending to dive into the water from there. But that low diving board was so springy, it flung me up higher than I started out, and I ended up missing the pool altogether, but landed on my feet directly in front of the audience, which could not believe what they were seeing, nor could I. However, as I do not have a video, I guess I will have to settle for the few voices who were there to corroborate my World Record leap. “You done it, and I saw it!”

In spite of that singular misfire, I did have a rather successful though short career as a clown diver in a water circus. Did I ever tell you about my favorite trick? Well, that will have to wait for a future column…

I shall leave you here with a trivia question, which professional baseball team was Mark Twain’s favorite? Right! The Chicago White Stockings…“Wait’ll next year!”

At a debate at Incline High School on Monday, Nov. 30, hosted by the Incline Village Crystal Bay Community Forum and Incline Village Crystal Bay Community Business Association, all 6 candidates for 3 slots on the Incline Village General Improvement District (IVGID) Board of Trustees were against outsourcing its recreation facilities, the general manager position and/or administration to a management firm.

Outsourcing question

The question stems from an August presentation by Troon management firm to the IVGID board during its general manager search. Troon is known for being a major player in the hospitality and club industry with 35,000+ professionals worldwide and expertise in club operations, food and beverage, sales and marketing, finance and accounting, human resources, procurement, agronomy, legal, technology, retail, design and development, risk management, racquet sports, golf instruction, and HOAs.

HWY 28-Single Lane Traffic Controls scheduled for this weekend

October 2, 2024 | Member Submitted

Submitted by IVGID

We are contacting you and your organization to let you know of the possibility of additional continuous single-lane closure traffic controls for the IVGID Effluent Pipeline Project construction at the Secret Creek Crossing on Nevada State Route 28 during the following dates: October 4 thru October 6, 2024.

Typically, the continuous 24-hour traffic controls conclude for the weekend on Fridays at 12:00 p.m., with work resuming on Sunday evening at 7:00 p.m. So, for this extended period, there will be continuous 24-hour traffic controls on this stretch of SR 28 until 12:00 p.m. on Friday, October 11, 2024.

While we realize it is not ideal to enforce single-lane traffic controls during the weekend, the location of this area of highway is within an extremely rocky zone where the bedrock extends above the road grade and throughout the entirety of the work area. The new IVGID pipeline is required to cross beneath the existing Secret Creek box culvert (12-ft depth); this portion of work is very complicated and is subject to many unknowns due to ground conditions and water intrusion from the creek.  For the safety of those working on the project and traveling in the area, this extended single-lane closure is necessary.

IVGID and the project contractor have deliberately scheduled the subject work task in the shoulder season to avoid summer/peak-season traffic volumes.

We appreciate any collaboration in messaging this closure to both community members and visitors. We will provide updates and detailed information to your organizations to assist with this effort.

Please see the attached maps and photographs of the location and to familiarize yourself with the project.  Please reach out to IVGID Communications Coordinator Kari Ferguson with any questions or concerns.

IVGID greatly appreciates your help in spreading the word about these potential traffic impacts.

Sincerely,

Hudson Klein, P.E.

The Local Lens – Incline Village Library & Civic Engagement

October 2, 2024 | Linda Offerdahl

Libraries today are not what they used to be. They are so much more! My first job at age 14 was shelving books in the local library. I loved it because I was a bookworm. Remember the card catalog? Now, there are so many more ways to search for information and books.

Libraries have become a resourceful place to learn, not just from books, but a gathering place in the community. They manage programming at the Community Center, the old library building next door that also houses the Incline Justice Court.  If you need a private room for a Zoom, try the library. Do you need dedicated IT help with your phone? Book a Librarian. Virtual Reality, 3D printing, yes!  The Incline Village Library, under the direction of John Crockett, is exceptional, and I want to give a big shout-out to its staff. Not only are there many events at the library, but they were also at the Sheriff’s Picnic with the Book Mobile last Saturday!

Carrying on with how valuable the library is…

CIVIC ENGAGEMENT

Tahoe Talks has a town hall format to discuss relevant issues. Voting Access is the theme on Tuesday,  October 8. Nevada Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar and two professors from nearby community colleges will be on hand. Incline Village Library is also the location for voting in the election on November 5.

By the way, last night, John Crockett was the moderator at the IVGID Candidate Forum, hosted by IVCBA and the IVCB Community Forum. Six candidates were present and the crowd at the high school was very civilized. Thank you!

BEAUTIFICATION

The weather is so beautiful right now that no one has an excuse not to be out cleaning up their yard or the Village. Upper Tyner neighbors….join Trevor Smith’s major clean-up this weekend.

Trash to Treasures is an on-going special interest group at Incline Middle School. Their latest project is painting art on bear boxes!  Maybe we all should…or better yet, find out if they can do mine!

CALENDAR

There are too many things to mention, so please go online to IVCBA.org/calendar. But the only fundraising Oktoberfest-style event (that I know of) in Incline is tomorrow’s Barktoberfest at Pet Network. Hope to see you there!

Our Weekly Snapshot is taking a Holiday with all the students next week. Expect to see all the Community News and Events on Wednesday, October 16th.

Rotary Club of Tahoe-Incline Gospel Mission Reno

October 1, 2024 | Member Submitted

Submitted by Christina Fahad

The Rotary Club of Tahoe-Incline collected non-perishables for the Sparks-Reno Gospel Mission in Reno. The people in the picture are Robert Esser, Tiffany Clemente, Pam Sheldon and Christina Fahad.

The Rotary collected food for two months, August and September and took it down to their Warehouse. Rotary collected the food and shelved the food among other food that was already there. They put out a barrel at the Incline Rec Center to collect the food from the community. The food is used to feed the Homeless Shelter of about 40-50 men, about 20 women.

They also prepare meals everyday for the homeless men and women who come everyday for a hot meal on Record street. On Tuesdays and Thursdays they give out bags of food to the community in need. And one Sunday a month at Journey Church they give out food and we help people in need.

These are the lowest supplies I have seen of the shelves at the Mission. We need to collect more food. Three men from the Homeless shelter also helped us with the bagging and sorting of food. They were very kind and grateful. Overall it is a gracious time and of human satisfaction to do this. Thank you to all who participated.

Fire Prevention Week October 6-12th

SMOKE ALARMS – MAKE THEM WORK FOR YOU!

Submitted by Tia Rancourt of North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District

As Fire Prevention Week approaches, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reminds us of the critical role working smoke alarms play in keeping families safe from fire.

According to the NFPA, having functional smoke alarms in the home reduces the risk of dying in a fire by more than half (54 percent). Unfortunately, nearly three out of five home fire fatalities occur in homes without smoke alarms or with non-functional ones.

“Working smoke alarms in the home are the first line of defense and can make a life-saving difference during a fire by giving people the time they need to get out safely,” said Fire Marshal John James of the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District (NLTFPD).

NLTFPD urges residents to follow these essential smoke alarm safety tips:

  • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of your home, including the basement.
  • Ensure smoke alarms meet the needs of all household members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
  • Test smoke alarms monthly by pressing the test button.
  • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.

NLTFPD will be conducting Fire Prevention Week station tours with local students, focusing on home fire safety, developing exit plans, and understanding the importance of working smoke alarms. For more information about Fire Prevention Week and smoke alarms, please visit fpw.org.
