Summer’s Last Hurrah

August 22, 2023 | Linda Offerdahl

I just checked my calendar….my IVCBA.org calendar, that is. Yikes! It’s a busy week coming up!

No one will be surprised that I have FOMO…fear of missing out. How am I going to manage Thursday, August 24? Geographically, I could start in Crystal Bay at Sabrina Bellecci’s Inside Out Re/Max office for the Northern Nevada Hopes Reception and show my support for a new healthcare clinic on 4th Street in Reno. Then it’s off to the Chateau for PEO’s  “Tastes of Incline” Fundraiser for scholarships. I predict this will be a LOT of locals like me who love to connect with the community.

After feasting on yummy food from local restaurants, I will plop myself down in a chair on the UNR@Lake Tahoe campus to listen to the Talks@Tahoe presenter Professor Zeb Hogan talk about Monster Fish.  I am just wondering if Tahoe Tessie will be there too.

Grand Openings… Jonathan Malley’s new business,  Back Country Chiropractic, has a grand opening on Friday, August 25, from 12-3. Join IVCBA in a ribbon-cutting ceremony to kick it off.

Havana Nights….Tahoe Family Solutions annual fundraiser at Aspen Grove on August 29. I PROMISE the weather will be warmer! (Don’t you wish you had my rose-colored glasses?)

I will have to ask Myles from Incline Spirits and Cigars if he is supplying cigars for this Cuban-flavored event!

We have many businesses in Incline that support our community. I want to give a big shout-out to Incline Village Realtors “Good Neighbors Committee” for Stuffing the Bus once again with school supplies for our kids. Stacy Collins, First Centennial Title, was once again the lead organizer. They are 2/3 of the way to their goal and taking donations until September 1st.

Did you know… how active our service clubs are? The Rotary Club of Tahoe-Incline currently partners with Cornerstone Church for a food drive for the Gospel Mission in Reno. The Rotary “morning club” meets on Thursdays at 7 am at the Hyatt; the Incline Village “noon club” meets Mondays at noon at Parasol.

Be sure you read the breaking news in this week’s SnapShot about their expanded community grants! What a great contribution Parasol and their donors make to our community!

Local Lens – Out and About in Incline Village

August 2, 2023 | Linda Offerdahl

It’s summertime, and the livin’ is easy… if you can keep up with the plethora of events, your houseguests, and what’s going on in town! Between concerts everywhere, Little Shop of Horrors at the Shakespeare Festival, and golf tournaments, I need another vacation.

I am back from my annual trip in northern Minnesota at my “other” Lake Up North, a term those of you from the Midwest will recognize. OK, it’s one of 10,000 lakes, but it is fairly well-known, Lake Vermilion. Minnesotans make this weekly or annual pilgrimage to a cabin or resort where we get reacquainted with mosquitos, deer flies, and the Northern Lights if we are lucky. Not that they are pesky, but did I mention the relatives!

Those relatives are now headed to Incline Village. I am on my third weekend in a row of company, but I am not complaining. Company gives me the opportunity to experience summer in Incline at its best. So far, we have attended the Beach Boys concert fundraiser for Incline Village Community Hospital, Little Shop of Horrors, the Teesters member-guest golf tournament, and enjoyed the Farmers Market on Thursdays at Incline Library. We also explored the myriad paths that wind through the woods between the Rec Center and the beaches, followed by a great lunch on the patio at Sage Leaf. We also stopped into the Science Center for some hands-on learning about Lake Tahoe in the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center.

While dining at Sage Leaf, I stopped into the Clearly Tahoe shop with all kinds of goodies for the outdoors, including the cutest picnic baskets ever. We walked by Vista Bikes, where people can rent an E-bike and just head right down Village to Lakeshore for a ride. Tahoe Multisport in Village Center has bikes, kayaks, you name it. Bike rentals abound in Incline…the Hyatt, Flume Trail bikes at Tunnel Creek, and Village Ski Loft. I hope I didn’t leave anyone out!

Coming up this weekend…it’s a Classical Tahoe concert on the beautiful UNR@lake Tahoe campus, hiking(for the younger set), and a Sand Harbor Experience organized by Chris Talbot and his Around Tahoe Tours company. This is a guaranteed way to get ON the beach without waiting in line for hours outside the entrance. They provide all of the set-up…umbrellas, chairs, and coolers. PLUS, Clearly Tahoe rents kayaks and Stand Up Paddles on site, so no need to drag those bulky toys to the beach. I’m looking forward to the tour part of it, getting educated on Lake Tahoe’s history and lore.

If we had more time, a tour of the Thunderbird Lodge would be top of my list. The Visitor Bureau is a happening place these days, and good for locals too. Check out Sustainable Tahoe’s Earth Walk to learn about our native Indians, enjoy the outdoors, and not get caught up in parking hassles at the East Shore Trail.

My favorite experiences of the summer are the Monday and Tuesday night concerts at Sand Harbor. I will be at The Reno Phil concert on Monday, August 7 for the Tribute to Rodgers and Hammerstein. I will be singing along and maybe dancing in the aisles. Does anyone have an extra ticket for the Linda Ronstadt Experience on Aug 15??

On the more serious side, the annual Lake Tahoe Summit is being held at the Kings Beach Conference Center. It is organized by Tahoe Fund. Go to their website to register. The Lake Tahoe Summit brings all the politicians together, reminding us that the Basin is bi-state and it’s up to all of us to do what we can for the Basin, whether it’s high-level policies or just picking up trash from the trails.

Hey, I know it’s busy right now, and the road construction doesn’t help. Don’t forget to take TART Connect, generously funded by Travel North Tahoe Nevada and Washoe County, among other agencies. Be welcoming to our second homeowners and visitors, and kindly educate them on ways to “Take Care Tahoe” and “Slow Down Tahoe”- signs courtesy of Helen Neff. Our business community is grateful for the summer season, which helps maintain them throughout the shoulder seasons.

Local Heroes Parade Features Children from the Community

June 28, 2023 | Linda Offerdahl

The Local Heroes parade on July 2nd is becoming famous for many things, but perhaps the biggest scene stealers are the entries with kids.

For the third year in a row,  IVCBA features “Future Local Heroes” toddlers and preschoolers dressing up as their favorite hero… The parade starts at 10am with the IVGID kids bike parade and then an amazing assortment of floats, walking groups, classic cars, and equipment from Washoe County.

Stealing the scene however, may be the youngsters dressed up like firefighters, peace officers, health care professionals, teachers or superheroes. The Incline village Nursery School, Tahoe Family Solutions and Tahoe Connection for Families.

Other groups feature kids as well: Daisy Day Care has their own float filled with adorable munchkins. The Lake Tahoe School has arguably the largest float with kids of all ages.

Be sure to  visit the Community Fair and the Backyard BBQ on the Village Green immediately following the parade.

The Local Lens – Community News

June 14, 2023 | Linda Offerdahl

There has been a lot of dissension in our little village lately!  It is making IVCBA’s mission…that of “building cohesiveness for the sustainability of Incline Village and Crystal Bay” very difficult. My rose-colored glasses think it’s a good thing that many people are paying attention to the issues. It is my sincere hope that residents can agree to disagree, remain civil and value solutions that may be a compromise but don’t compromise one’s integrity and values. Here are some “golden rules” for civility that encourage the expression of multiple viewpoints

  • Focus on the issue, not the person: no personal attacks under the guise of free speech.
  • Constructive, not destructive, criticism.
  • Keep to the topic at hand.
  • Keep an open mind and listen, respectively.
  • Don’t jump to conclusions. Listen to all viewpoints.
  • Be gracious if other opinions prevail.

These rules apply to individuals and to organizations!

I encourage everyone to be a knowledgeable citizen. Attend meetings…the IVGID board meetings (tonight), IVGID’s Conversation Café on Thursdays, Community Forum on 1st and 3rd Fridays (this Friday), and WC Citizen Advisory Board meetings. For information on IVGID meetings, go to yourtahoeplace.com. For the latest information on the possible middle school closure, go to WCSD.org or IVCBA.org/education. WCSD has published their Questions and Answers from the last meeting. They are published in this week’s SnapShot

Invest in Incline is an Advocacy Network. IVCB community 1st has the best coverage of agency meetings.

UNR@ LAKE TAHOE

Two years ago, Sierra Nevada University made the decision to become part of the University of Nevada’s high education system. This was very difficult for many who had known and loved SNU. However, with declining enrollment(across the country) and COVID, UNR was the best option to keep an institution of higher learning open in Incline. It took one year to make that transition.

Last July, UNR officially took over.  Dr. Jill Heaton has worked tirelessly to ensure that SNU students could complete their degrees and that the campus would be used effectively by UNR for education. Its “Semester at Lake Tahoe” will take advantage of the strengths of the campus and its location. Dr. Heaton has worked to ensure that UNR continues to be engaged with the community.

Classical Tahoe will continue to hold its summer concerts on the campus. The Holman Art Center is still a resource for the community. Reasons to walk the campus this summer: the Demonstration Garden for ideas on native plants for your garden, Tahoe Science Center for hands-on exhibits for Lake Tahoe and geology, the paths along the creek and between the campus and the Rec Center to enjoy the outdoors without getting on a bike or the East Shore Trail. Let me know if you see my ideal “Community Christmas Tree!”.

FATHER’S DAY IS SUNDAY

Yes, it’s a Hallmark moment. But can there really be too many days to honor people who raised you and loved you? If there is someone in your life, biological or not, who was a significant person in your life now or at some point, thank them!

COMMUNITY SIGNS AT BOTH ENDS OF TOWN

I saw NDOT putting up the new signs for service and faith-based organizations that we made last year. If anyone can get past all the road construction to see them, let me know how they look! I am grateful for the road repair, but I have exhausted all my work- arounds for the construction sites. Glad NDOT and Washoe County Roads are ON IT!

The Local Lens – Celebrate the 4th of July

June 7, 2023 | Linda Offerdahl

CELEBRATE THE 4TH OF JULY WITH THE INCLINE VILLAGE SKYSHOW

New traditions are being established for the 4th of July. For the second year, a drone show will replace the traditional fireworks display. The event this year will be an evening of family entertainment culminating in a laser show followed by a drone show.

Some background: Incline’s traditional fireworks were originally funded by some of the local philanthropists on Lakeshore: Michael Milken and Warren Trepp, along with IVGID and the Visitor Bureau. In 2006, Red, White and Tahoe Blue was established to host the fireworks, along with a weekend of events including a local parade. For years, we celebrated our country and our veterans with fireworks. The US Air Force Pararescue jumpers (PJs) performed a training mission over Lake Tahoe too. Then COVID hit and we could not have any celebration in 2020. The Red White and Tahoe Blue organization has disbanded the year before. The PJs cannot do their training mission on a private beach anymore. The beaches are overcrowded already on any weekend, but especially so over the peak 4th of July week.

The fire danger in Tahoe has been steadily increasing. The Caldor fire in Southshore in 2021 was a wakeup call that we couldn’t ignore. It takes a lot more than one big winter to overcome that danger. At the same time, awareness and concern for Lake Tahoe clarity has increased. We can no longer close our eyes to the pollutants and massive effort, including scuba divers, to clean up the Lake after the fireworks.

Enter a more technologically modern approach to celebrations: laser and drone shows. The drone company, Verge Aero, was selected for its quality drones with a longer battery than most. We can expect to see patriotic images as well as some of our local heroes such as firefighters and teachers. The event will be held on Ridgeline ballfields, behind Incline Middle School on Incline Way. Spectators are invited to join their neighbors for an evening of family entertainment. Food trucks and beer tents by Incline Spirits will be on hand. Bowl Incline will be selling takeout food across the street. DJ Mark Sexton and Emcee “Uncle E” will entertain the crowd before the laser and drone show. Most of all, expect to enjoy a relaxing evening  spent with your family and friends.

I hear a lot of complaining about visitors at this time of the year. Here’s a gentle reminder that most of those visitors own property and are the ones occupying their second homes over the 4th of July week. In others, words, they are locals, albeit part time. Travel North Tahoe Nevada, aka the Welcome Center is focusing their efforts on sustainable tourism. Visitors and locals alike are encouraged to take the Traveler Responsiblity pledge to keep Lake Tahoe and its surrounding environment clean and free from litter. The IVCB SkyShow is an extension of our commitment to these sustainability efforts.

The Local Lens – Workforce Housing Updates

May 30, 2023 | Linda Offerdahl

Workforce Housing is the single largest issue that afflicts our community, as well as being a crisis across the nation. It affects the viability of our local merchants and their ability to hire staff. We have seen problems keeping teachers and other professional workers, as well as service workers. With the high cost of fuel, commuting is often not a feasible option either. The toll this takes is both direct and indirect. We have all seen some of our favorite stores or restaurants close. Even owners of businesses have had to move to Reno or Carson. Indirectly, this results in a decline in the “Village vibe” that makes us all feel like one big happy family.

Under the auspices of the Tahoe Prosperity Center, and funding primarily from Washoe County, the Washoe Tahoe Housing Partnership was formed. Three years ago, a housing study was conducted to quantify the need for housing in our region. Last summer, consultants were hired to formulate a roadmap. The Housing Partnership is comprised of key agencies including TRPA, Incline employers and local residents, selected for their interest or expertise in some aspect of the housing partnership. Committees are formed around housing programs, finance, community engagement, and development/redevelopment zoning and housing policies.

The WTHP mission: Accelerate local housing solutions for those who live and work in Washoe Tahoe.

The WTHP vision: A thriving vibrant community that has housing solutions to support our local residents, workforce and businesses.

The roadmap has a wealth of information, ideas, and recommendations; however, it is not an implementation plan. Now the hard work begins, determining the best solutions for Incline, together. What do we do next?

LEARN ABOUT THE ROADMAP!

Go to Tahoepropserity.org and click on the Projects tab for the pulldown menu to find Washoe Tahoe Housing Partnership. You will find the roadmap here.

ATTEND THE CAB MEETING ON JUNE 5th

Commissioner Hill will be presenting the roadmap at this meeting of the Washoe County Citizen Advisory Board. Although you can attend in person at Incline Library, I recommend attending on Zoom. These meetings have a great format; there is a presentation, CAB members, all from our community ask questions and then open it up for public comment and questions. Join the meeting via Zoom at https://us06web.zoom.us/j/82231865379?pwd=TTF2M3FaSnR0bE9jQVA2Q1lJb2hqUT09

SIGN THE PLEDGE TO SUPPORT HOUSING!

This is not a request for a donation. It says that you support the work being done to find housing solutions.  Commissioner Hill will ask the Board of Commissioners to approve the roadmap in July. Signing this pledge tells the commissioners that housing IS an important issue in our community, and we want to see Washoe County funding housing programs.

Sign the pledge here.

Local Lens – Community Updates & Memorial Day Events

May 24, 2023 | Linda Offerdahl

MEMORIAL DAY

Memorial Day weekend evokes a lot of Midwest memories. It’s a time of spring cleaning and a time for remembering loved ones and honoring those that served our country in the armed forces.

IVCB Veterans Club Annual Memorial Service at Burnt Cedar at 10 am (arrive at 9:30).

This year is especially poignant as the Vets Club honors AJ Banford, a ‘seasoned veteran’ who passed away this year. The IHS scholarship for a JROTC student has been named after him by the IVCB Vets Club.   AJ was a 1962 graduate of the US Air Force Academy. He served a combat tour in South Vietnam, flying Huey gunships for the Navy Seawolves HAL 3. Banford moved to Incline Village in 1975 and started the Radford Company, a mortgage business, in 1979. He was a counselor for the VA’s PTSD program in Reno, having been a wounded warrior three times. AJ was last year’s Local Heroes Parade Marshal. A memorial service is being held for him on June 3.

Some of the wonderful people who lived and contributed much to our community passed away this last year. They are missed. Please think of them and others not listed here, especially on Memorial Day.

AJ Banford, Mike Croke, Kaye Dietrich, Ross Heppe, Bryan Hoopes, Donna McKay,

Robert Ohlmer, David Parker, Anga Rebane, Bear Resna, Thalia Routsis, David Smith

MEMORIAL DAY SPRING CLEANING

Who gets through the weekend without making a trip to Mountain Hardware and Sports! Go on Saturday, when they are serving up hotdogs and entertainment by the local group ‘Jacked Up.’ I swear there are more pine cones and needles than in previous years!

Get them cleaned up so your defensible space is good. And do it BEFORE June 3 so you are free to Clean up the Village and the East Shore Trail. Pick up supplies at IVGID. And start early enough so you can head over to the Incline Library Block Party in the afternoon! It’s the kick-off to their summer reading program.

LOCAL BUSINESSES are doing their part too. Thank you to IPM, Tahoe Immo, and the many other property managers who keep our commercial areas looking good. IVCBA and the Incline Village Main Street program are undertaking beautification projects…it all starts with a spruced-up Village. More later!

I have to mention yet another activity on June 3:

The Enchanted Forest Fur Ball, a fundraiser for the Pet Network Humane Society!

Incline Village/Crystal Bay Community Job Fair

May 10, 2023 | Linda Offerdahl

The IVCB Community Job Fair is being held on Monday, May 22 from 3 – 6 pm at the IVGID Recreation Center parking lot at 980 Incline Way. Major sponsors include the Hyatt, Raleys, IVGID, and IVCBA, the community and business association. Prospective employees are invited to visit with local employers. High schoolers, retired residents, and anyone looking for extra income this summer are encouraged to attend! Refreshments will be provided by Raleys.

The Job Fair is hoping to close the gap between the extra employees needed for the summer season, along with longer-term systemic problems with finding employees in Incline Village and Crystal Bay. Jobs at all levels, professional, service, full-time, part-time, and temporary are available at many businesses. The Job Fair will have major employers like the Hyatt, Raleys, and IVGID, as well as some smaller businesses on hand, to discuss job openings with prospective employees informally in a “one-stop” setting. Lisa Hoopes, IVGID Talent Acquisition Specialist, urges prospective employees of all ages to meet and interview for seasonal and career opportunities with hiring managers.

Housing and transportation issues have led to this chronic shortage of employees. The cost of housing has become prohibitive. The high cost of commuting from Reno or Carson City has limited the pool of available employees. These are issues for the entire spectrum of employees, from service workers to professionals. IVCBA works to help the community convene and address these issues.
Under the leadership of Tahoe Prosperity Center and Washoe County, the Washoe Tahoe Housing Partnership has been working for two years on a study and roadmap to give guidance to the community on housing solutions. Their “roadmap” is being presented to the Partnership on May 10th. It will be available on Tahoe Prosperity Center’s website for review. The roadmap will be presented to the community at the Washoe County Citizen Advisory Board meeting on Monday, June 5, on Zoom and in person at the Incline Library on Alder.

IVCBA held a roundtable on Workforce Transportation, bringing together agencies and employers was held in March. A meeting in June will be held to get more people interested in Regional Transit Commission’s Van Pools.

The IVCB Job Fair is meant to be a true community collaboration to create a stronger business community and meet the demanding needs of the summer season. Businesses wishing to participate should reach out to michelle@ivcba.org or register here.

Registration cost is $25 for IVCBA members and $50 for nonmembers. Participating businesses should plan to bring their own table and chairs to the IVGID Rec Center parking lot by 2:30. Event runs from 3 -6pm.

Local Lens – Community Updates

May 3, 2023 | Linda Offerdahl

TRANSPORTATION

The Tahoe Transportation Plan has been approved by the Washoe County Board of Commissioners. Thank you, Alexis Hill. Now the hard work begins. How do we move these impressive plans forward? Priority (that means money) is being placed on increasing rideshare services through TARTConnect, a multi-use path between Incline Village and Crystal Bay, and better snow removal from our sidewalks.

Thanks to our web guru, Julie Malkin-Manning, IVCBA now has a page dedicated to transportation, check it out here. It has information such as rides to the airport, TART and TARTConnect, RTC Van Pools. Additionally, it is updated with the community issues around transportation right now. Looking for links to the TTD and the mobility hub? The Tahoe Transportation Plan? You can find them all here. IVCBA has a committee on Workforce Transportation. You can sign up by sending an email to info@ivcba.org.

CAB MEETINGS

I recommend attending the CAB, Citizen Advisory Board meetings held monthly by Washoe County. The May 2 meeting was a presentation by TRPAs Karen Fink, who spoke on the work being done around housing and zoning.  The Washoe Tahoe Housing Partnership Roadmap will be presented at the CAB meeting on June 5. These are professional presentations with time for community input.

WASHOE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONER MEETINGS

We need your voice heard at local meetings! Attending the Washoe County Board of Commissioners meeting via zoom will be available on Tuesday, May 9. This is to allow public comment from Incline residents on issues that pertain to them. There is an issue on short term rentals on the agenda. The Incline Public Library is setting up the zoom for any Incline residents to speak, the meeting begins at 10am on Tuesday May 9th.

WASHOE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT

WCSD LISTENED…do I have your attention? There is a second community meeting tonight about Incline Middle School in the Duffield Theater from 6-7pm. Public schools are at the heart of every community, and we need to keep ours intact. Get the details here.

SHOPPING FOR MOTHER’S DAY

I did not know this until I looked at the IVCBA calendar, there is a craft fair at the Chateau on Saturday!! The IVCBA event calendar is a great resource for all of the local community events! Bridget Giroux Designs has a pop-up event going on this weekend too. Find them in the Incline Plaza building above Bite. As long as you are out and about, I always like to head over to see what Potlatch and Panache have going on. I definitely need to do some retail therapy!

BEST OF TAHOE

This is where you vote on your favorite businesses on the North Shore. We need YOU to vote for Incline Village and Crystal Bay businesses. This is a shameless ploy to get exposure for IVCBA businesses! I voted this week, after getting a plea from Steve T at Bowl Incline. I hope next year we can get a lot more of our businesses on this extensive list of the best of everything. VOTE HERE daily until May 17!

Don’t miss a thing! Head over to https://business.ivcba.org/event-calendar to view all the events and ways to engage with the community.

Local Lens – Engage to Build Community Where We LIVE.WORK.PLAY.

April 19, 2023 | Linda Offerdahl

Incline Village has a few community issues to address this month and your engagement is needed!

MOBILITY HUB

The location of an Incline Village Mobility Hub has generated mixed opinions. It is important for Incline Village to be a part of the regional solution for transportation and to support workforce transportation solutions from Reno and Carson. Additionally, reducing the number of vehicles on the road is a goal, and providing visitors with the opportunity to leave their cars behind is one way to encourage sustainable travel and tourism. To help direct the conversation about community needs, residents can participate in a survey about what the mobility hub should entail and/or attend a mobility hub workshop on April 20.

INCLINE VILLAGE PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Public schools play a critical role in the Incline Village community, and the community is being asked for input on two issues. One is a policy revision of an Administration Regulation (7087) that removes local input from the process for school closures within the school district. The public comment period has been extended until April 27 to hear from educators, parents, and community members. Click here for more information and ways to submit your comment.

The other issue involves the Washoe County School District’s long-term plan to modernize all district school facilities, which could lead to the closure of Incline Middle School. The district is requesting community participation in an online survey in advance of a second community meeting on May 3 at Incline High School.

EARTH WEEK

Earth Week is also being celebrated this month, with Earth Day falling on April 24. The Take Care Tahoe organization has a lot of ideas for celebrating at the Tahoe Earth Week Challenge, and visitors can also find ways to be a steward of North Lake Tahoe by visiting the Travel North Tahoe Nevada website or participating in Sustain Tahoe’s Incline Village Earth Walk, available year-round.

COMMUNITY MEETINGS

There are a number of community meetings that take place monthly at which you can learn more about community issues and how to get involved, including the Community Forum the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month at the Incline Library and the Washoe County Citizen Advisory Board (CAB) Meeting on May 1 at 5:30 at the Incline Library or on Zoom.

For more details on these events visit the IVCBA Calendar of Events.
