In the News: Incline community rallies to keep schools from consolidating

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — Incline Village students, staff, and parents gathered Wednesday, April 5, to discuss possible changes that the district could see in the future, including the potential closure of Incline Middle School. 

Washoe County School District contracted with CannonDesign to assist in long-range planning for the next phase of WC-1 (which passed in 2016) funding use.

Incline Village schools have been one of the main focuses of CannonDesign. Since 2000, school enrollment has nearly been cut in half for Incline Schools. Currently, 245 elementary students, 144 middle school students and 324 high school students are enrolled in those schools.

In the News – Tahoe organizations recognize Sexual Assault Awareness Month; Multiple events on tap

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — April is celebrated nationally as Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and organizations in the basin are preparing to recognize the month with events that center around raising awareness and supporting survivors. 

On the North Shore of Lake Tahoe, Sierra Community House is doing as much work as they can to spread awareness and offer support to community members in the Tahoe and Truckee area. 

Last year alone, the SCH team provided 677 community members with sexual assault-related services, including advocacy, peer-counseling, safety planning, and through their support with their 24-hour help-hotline.

In the News – IVGID approves Diamond Peak rate increases, discusses ways to recruit, retain employees

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — The general improvement district Board of Trustees met Wednesday, March 22, and discussed a number of items related to the health of the district, ranging from employee benefits to rate changes at Diamond Peak Resort. 

The meeting was led by Vice Chair Sara Schmitz since Chairman Matthew Dent was not in attendance. At the beginning of the meeting, the board decided to defer the budget workshop to Wednesday, April 5, in order to allow trustees more time to digest information and work with staff so that they can further refine numbers and ensure the materials are clear and concise.

In the News: Incline Village association hosts workforce transportation discussion

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — The Incline Village Crystal Bay Business Association recently gathered local agencies and business owners from the North Shore of Lake Tahoe to discuss solutions for workforce transportation in the basin. 

IVCBA Executive Director Linda Offerdahl brought together everyone from Washoe County Commissioner Alexis Hill to small business owners like Bowl Incline owner Steve Tomkovicz, who were able to share their opinions on what needs to be done in the area to support employees. 

“There’s noting like a great crisis to bring people together,” said Hill. “I think that’s sadly where we are as a region, and I think that is why people are enthusiastically gathering on this issue.”

In the News: ‘It’s been really busy’: T’s Mesquite Rotisserie reopens 8 months after fire

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — T’s Mesquite Rotisserie in Incline Village has reopened after being closed for nearly eight months, and business has been booming. 

“It’s been busy,” said Co-owner and Manager Jaime Swing. “We were starting from nothing and then it was like Fourth of July-type business, but it was all locals. We really didn’t know what to expect. We thought it might be a little busier than it normally would be this time of year, but it was really, really busy. We’ve been super lucky. We’re really happy with the turnout.” 

The business was forced to shut down shortly before the July Fourth, 2022, after a hood fire broke out in the kitchen.

In the News: New Film Explores Lake Tahoe Housing Crisis

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — The Lake Tahoe housing crisis is a hot topic, and local resident Elizabeth Cameron has documented the difficulties of finding places to live. 

Cameron was a coach for the Palisades Tahoe ski team five years ago, before moving away to pursue other ventures. When she returned in late 2021 for the winter season, housing prices had skyrocketed. 

“I was so blown away by how just five years prior, it had been so easy to find a place,” said Cameron. “I was just shocked by how much more difficult living up here, from a rental perspective, had become in just five years.”

In the News: Incline agency discusses housing solutions with Washoe County during inaugural member meeting

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — Members of the Incline Village Crystal Bay Business Association came together for their inaugural member meeting Wednesday, Feb. 8, at the Chateau, to discuss goals as an organization for the upcoming year. 

The meeting began with a presentation from Washoe County Commissioner Alexis Hill, who outlined initiatives currently happening in Washoe Tahoe, including workforce housing, a potential short term rental moratorium in Incline Village, transportation, and traffic and pedestrian safety.

IVCBA Executive Director Linda Offerdahl has been a champion of connecting Incline Village with Washoe County representatives in order to bring positive change to the district.

In the News: More Security Measures Coming Soon to Incline Village Schools

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — Incline Village students will begin to see new security measures that is expected to increase safety at schools as soon as this spring.

New additions include a gun-detecting dog to be trained in the coming months, updated security measures as a result funding by the Dave and Cheryl Duffield Foundation, and two new Washoe County deputies on the Incline High School campus next year. 

With recent acts of violence happening all over the country, including multiple school shootings, the Washoe County School District Board of Trustees agreed that the safety and security of their students is a top priority, but it also falls on the entire community as well.

In the News: IVGID Discusses Beach House Project, Announce Ordinance 7 Public Hearing Date

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — The Incline Village Board of Trustees got right down to it in their meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 9 with a long discussion about plans for the Beach House project.

Staff requested the board’s feedback on the design that was initially shown at the end of 2019, which the board felt needed some serious updates before moving forward. 

While the design focused on improving bathroom conditions and availability at Incline Beach, along with updating the entire kitchen and adding in a dining deck, it was noted by District Project Manager Bri Waters that there would still need to be portable bathrooms on site in order to meet the population of the beach during the summer season.

In the News: Incline Middle School Awarded $50k Grant, Begins New Robotics Class

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — Incline Village Middle School has been awarded a $49,559 grant form the Governor’s Office to build a state-of-the-art robotics course for the campus. 

The grant will allow social studies teacher Kevin Edwards to teach students to code and operate robots, drones, submersible claws, and to develop their STEM skills to track, find, and recover trash that is left in and around the basin.
