Where to Spend New Year’s Eve in IV/CB

December 19, 2023 | Kayla Anderson

I remember being a little kid thinking that the year 2024 was so far away. It was unconscionable to me that anyone would ever live that long…especially if we all somehow survived Y2K. I imagined us all driving around in hovercrafts like The Jetsons (what a traffic nightmare that would be) and heck, California might not be around anymore since it was predicted it would some day drop off into the ocean.

But here we all are, approaching 2024. All the computers didn’t blow up when the clock struck midnight in the year 2000, most of California’s landmass is still attached to the rest of America, and we all have fostered a special attachment to this place we call Lake Tahoe. How lucky we are.

Here’s where to spend New Year’s Eve in Incline Village/Crystal Bay…and Happy New Year!

Catch an Early Torchlight Parade and Fireworks Show at Mt. Rose

Get an early start on 2024 by ending 2023 with a day of skiing or snowboarding at Mt. Rose followed by a snowcat parade, torchlight ski parade, and fireworks show on the main side of the mountain. The snowcats start heading up to the top at 4:45pm after skiers have cleared the hill, followed by a torchlight ski parade at 5pm and fireworks show at 5:45pm. This is an event not to miss, and you can get home early enough to catch the next New Year’s Party. www.skirose.com

The Bowl Incline New Year’s Eve Party

Bowl Incline is closing to the public on the evening of December 31st at 6pm to give a one-of-a-kind NYE experience, providing ticketholders will an all-access pass to go crazy with activities and upscale buffet. The buffet open from 6pm-8pm will be complete with soup, salads, carving station, seafood, dessert bar, and a snack buffet from 9pm-11pm with nachos and pretzels. Along with that, New Year’s Eve partygoers can enjoy unlimited bowling; unlimited arcade games and billiards; a DJ and dancing in the upstairs lounge, axe throwing for prizes, party favors, and a champagne toast at midnight. Tickets cost $250/adults and $100/kids ages 2-13; buy online at www.bowlincline.com

BoomBox at the Crystal Bay Casino

Brothers Zion Rock Godchaux and Kinsman MacKay are back for New Year’s Eve, bringing in a bit of house, blues, rock, and soulful beats that make it pretty much impossible not to move with the music. Since 2004, BoomBox has built quite a following in Lake Tahoe thanks to its seamless integration of pulling together a variety of genres (so this show is sure to be packed).

“The sound is about pulling from anything that you’d hear coming out of a boombox, and distilling into a distinctive style,” explains Godchaux, which is a musical formula that can connect with any crowd. Join BoomBox with N2N at the Crystal Bay Casino on New Year’s Eve…tickets are $50 in advance and doors open at 8pm. Purchase online HERE.

Have Some Bubbly at the Stroke of Midnight at Glasses Wine Bar

Not only is Glasses celebrating its seventh year of being in business this month, but they are having parties all month long up until 2024. Join Kathleen and Rob Martens for their 7th Annual East Coast Party. Doors open at 6:30pm and the party starts at 7pm with live music, hats, noisemakers, appetizers, and sparkling wine on East Coast midnight. Tickets cost $40 per person ($34 for wine club members), and you buy them ahead of time- no walk-in’s allowed. https://glasseswinebar.com/

The Hyatt Regency Rings in the New Year With a Party

The Hyatt is planning a special dinner; live music with a DJ and band; dancing; cocktails; and more. It will welcome in 2024 with a Polar Bear Plunge the following morning for its overnight guests as a way to quickly snap out of their hangover. Hyattregencylaketahoe.com

Record Highs in 2024 – By David Vomund

December 19, 2023 | Member Submitted

Written and Submitted to IVCBA By David Vomund

I recently saw an article from Business Insider titled, “An ‘Extremely Rare’ Stock Market Signal With a 100% Accuracy Rate is Flashing and Points to Record Highs in 2024.”  Here is a link:  https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/stock-market-outlook-2024-new-highs-extremely-rare-signal-sp500-2023-12.

With a title like that I had to read on!  In truth, articles with similar titles are commonplace and I immediately become skeptical.  An “extremely rare signal” usually means it is statistically insignificant.  At other times the model just isn’t accurate.  With that in mind, I began testing the methodology to see if it works and to verify the recent bullish signal.

In the Business Insider article, strategist Ryan Detrick, on every business day, counts the number of S&P 500 stocks that close at a 20-day high.  A rare bullish signal occurs when 60 percent or more reach their 20-day high.  Detrick claims that since 1972 there were 15 signals and the S&P 500 was higher one year later every time with an average gain of 18 percent.

I reconstructed his model and found the last signal occurred on December 1.  Before that the signals were 11/10/22, 8/12/22, 6/5/20, 1/18/19, 10/31/14, etc.  As Detrick implied, the S&P 500 was higher one year after each of the above signals.  Sometimes there were tremendous gains, such as a 32-percent gain after the 6/5/20 signal.  Other times the gains were minimal, like the 3-percent gain after the 10/31/14 signal.

Interestingly, the buy signals seem to come in clumps.  There were six signals in 2009-10 but none appeared in 2015-17.  By the way, 2009-10 was one of the best buying opportunities of our lifetimes.  No signals occurred in 2007, right before the devastating 2008-09 Financial Crisis.

I can’t exactly duplicate Detrick’s analysis because my statistics are based on the current S&P 500 components.  Nevertheless, I’m happy to say that Detrick’s analysis seems to be accurate.  The December 1 signal is off to a great start.

Why does this system work?  The best market environment occurs when the majority of stocks participate in the advance.  Until December, no signals were reported in 2023 because the gains were a result of just a handful of large-cap technology stocks.  But recent advances are broad-based.  Over the last month the S&P 500 is up 5 percent while the Russell 2000, a measure of small-cap stocks, is up 10 percent.  It’s easier to make money when most stocks are rising.  That is happening now.  Bottom line:  Odds are it will happen next year, too.

In The News – Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team makes progress on wildfire prevention

December 19, 2023 | Member Submitted

Originally Published in The Tahoe Daily Tribune 12/19/2023, Submitted

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – Tahoe’s trees are now draped in snow, and wildfire is not top of mind for most people. The Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team, however, is taking action year round to protect lives, property, and the environment within the Lake Tahoe Basin from wildfire. This collaborative group formed in 2008 and includes 21 federal, tribal, state, and local conservation, land management, and fire agencies.

“One of the most important ways that we improve forest health and our community’s safety is by implementing priority fuel reduction projects such as thinning trees and conducting prescribed burns,” says North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection Division Chief Isaac Powning, Incident Commander of the TFFT.

In 2023, partners treated thousands of acres of forested and urban lots to reduce hazardous fuels. They made significant progress on many urgent Environmental Improvement Program (EIP) projects, such as NV Energy’s Resilience Corridors Project. The project is thinning forests around NV Energy utility infrastructure reducing hazardous fuels that could otherwise ignite a fire. Once complete, the project will create resilient forests adjacent to 28 miles of NV Energy utility infrastructure and will have thinned 290 acres.

In The News – New resources for Tahoe backcountry skiers, riders, seasoned and new

Richard Bothwell speaks loudly, so he can be heard over the howling wind and gives the conditions report for the day, capping it off with “A-plus,” he says. It’s always an A-plus day on the snow, unless there’s free coffee and cookies. Then it’s an A-plus-plus day.

Bothwell hopes his new guidebook, Light Tours of Tahoe, will help others get out and have an A-plus day, perhaps even an A-plus-plus day of their own.

He holds to his sunny outlook, even on these windy days and says in his social media videos, “if you like conditions like this, you’ll love the conditions today, A+.”

It will begin with a welcome reception with champagne and canapes between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. followed by a six-course dinner at 7 p.m. The holiday menu begins with an amuse bouche of a roesti potato, quail egg, and osiettra caviar. The second course will include a selection of either an oxtail and morel essence truffle ravioli, or seared diver scallops with a squid ink risotto and Moroccan saffron foam. The dining experience continues with a salad option of an asparagus salad with a sherry vinaigrette and poached lobster or a braised winter endive with purple haze goat cheese mousse and port wine poached pears, followed by a serving of strawberry and champagne sorbet. Melissa Mangiaracina Running for Justice of The Peace

December 14, 2023 | Member Submitted

On December 8, 2023, long-time Incline Village resident Melissa Mangiaracina announced that she would be running for the position of Justice of the Peace in the Incline Village Justice Court next year. This announcement came on the heels of Judge Alan Tiras’ announcement on December 7, 2023, that he will be retiring after he completes his current term.

Ms. Mangiaracina is not new to Incline Village or the Justice Court, having lived in Incline for over twenty years and having served as a Justice of the Peace Pro Tempore for the past ten years. In addition to her work for the Justice Court, Ms. Mangiaracina has served Incline and the larger Nevada community as a Staff and Senior Attorney for Nevada Legal Services, a Child Advocate Attorney for Washoe Legal Services, and the Directing Attorney of the Senior Law Project in Washoe County.

More recently, she shifted her focus from litigation to mediation. Ms. Mangiaracina currently mediates appellate cases for the Nevada Supreme Court, child protection cases for the Nevada Juvenile Dependency Mediation Program, and child-related relief for Washoe County. Ms. Mangiaracina has trained judges and legal professionals across the country and in Canada on a variety of legal topics for the past ten years.

Ms. Mangiaracina is also a co-founder of the Mediator Training Center, LLC. To learn more about Ms. Mangiaracina, her credentials, and her commitment to the community, you can visit her website at melissaforjp.com.

The Local Lens – Breaking News…

December 14, 2023 | Linda Offerdahl

I learned about these two things this week…

Judge E. Alan Tiras has announced that he will be retiring from his position as Judge of the Incline Justice Court at the end of his term in January 2025. Alan and his wife Natalie have lived in Incline Village for over 33 years, raising their family here, volunteering for the Boosters and CYMBAL in the schools, and serving as our local judge. Thank you, Alan, for your service! To learn more about him, read his biography at https://ivcbcourt.com/about-us/about-us-eat. Melissa Mangiaracina, the Pro Tem judge for the court has indicated interest in filing for this elected position.  She runs Sierra Mediation and Mediator Training Center.

The Hyatt has posted on their FB page that the start of their renovation has been indefinitely postponed. They were originally set to renovate the lakeside property this spring. The Hyatt is an anchor business in Incline, and they support our community in many ways, including fundraisers for our schools. Their property is beautifully decorated for the holidays, both inside and out. I am hoping they have their annual gingerbread display again this year. Stop in to see it and enjoy a meal or drink at the Sierra Café, Cutthroats, and of course, the fabulous Lone Eagle with its sunset views.

WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA

One of the most moving events of the season happens this Saturday, Wreaths Across America honors veterans for their service to our country.  Join our service clubs at a local cemetery on Saturday.  With a little digging, I found that there are 3 cemeteries for Vets in Northern Nevada. IVCB Veterans Club and Military Officers Association of America go to East Side Memorial Park in  Minden, PTDS Now! goes to Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, and the Rotary clubs go to Lone Mountain in Carson City. Wreaths can be purchased online at wreathsacrossamerica.org

A couple of things I didn’t mention in previous blogs….

  • IHS has a Winter Fest TONIGHT  from 6-8. Family activities, food, games, prizes and fun.
  • Village Plaza(aka Starbucks) has their Sip and Shop on Thursday. Did you know there are 3 different buildings with fun stuff…great deals on toys at Village Toys, really unique things at Clearly Tahoe, and don’t miss Santa at State Farm.
  • Christmas Tree Village has its Sip & Shop on Saturday, December 16. Sip at Crosbys, Mofos, Happy Tiers, Thania’s Juice Bar and Koi Sushi,  Shop at Tahoe Gifting Co., Karma Consignment Boutique and Village Pet Foundation Thrift. Don’t forget to stop by Village Ski Loft too!
  • Pet Network Free Donations in December: For the entire month of December, all adoptions at Pet Network will be graciously sponsored by the Gately Family Foundation. This generous sponsorship means that there will be NO adoption fees for any of the animals looking for their new homes.

ENJOY THE MUSIC THIS WEEKEND!

Incline Middle School music concert is this Thursday

TOCCATA performs Handel’s Messiah is this Friday

Incline Village School Updates

December 13, 2023 | Mary Danahey

Submitted by Incline Education Fund: Mary Danahey

Head over to Incline High School from 6pm to 8pm today! (12/13) for Winterfest, a community event featuring food, cookie decorating, trivia games, dreidel games, and more. Friends and family are welcome to attend! Entrance is $5, and you can enjoy pizza and a drink for an additional $5

Make your way over to Gus’ BBQ to check out the Incline Middle School’s Holiday Light Show. The robotics class has created a light show timed to holiday music as an entry for the Incline Northern Lights competition.

Mark your caldendars for the second annual Incline Elementary School Holiday parade, Dec 22 at 10:00.  Come watch the K-5th grade students maneuver their robots down the parade route all decked out in “holiday attire”.

And here’s a bunch of great news from our schools!

Our amazing educators:

Congratulations to 2 more of our amazing IHS teachers, Amy Henderson Seitz and Courtney Taves for completing their Maintenance Certification for their National Boards.  This achievement is a voluntary, advanced teaching credential that demonstrates their accomplishments and commitment to their craft.  It is the highest certification that a teacher can obtain, with less than 5% of Nevada high school teachers having done so.

IVCBA and IEF would also like to congratulate a few of our high school students – for both athletic and academic achievements:

IHS hosted the exciting Highlander Basketball Tournament last week and Tommy Williams amazed us all by scoring his 1,000th career point! Quite an accomplishment.

And not to be outdone, our first female wrestlers at IHS deserve recognition as well. As Principal Cahill remarked, “Pearl Carle and Isabel De Paz Shine have both shone fearless determination and willingness to step out of their comfort zone serve as an inspiration to us all.”

Principal Cahill also recognized the Highlander JROTC Leadership & Academic Bowl Team (JLAB)) for their outstanding achievements. JLAB is a prestigious, nationwide competition that culminates in the Level III JLAB Championship at Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., scheduled for June 2024.

Once again, the IHS ‘We the People’ team has made it to the state competition at UNR in February.
