FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 22, 2023

Incline Village, Nev. (May 22, 2023) – Every community member has experienced it as they move about daily life here in Tahoe – reduced days and hours at a favorite restaurant, help wanted signs in every store window, long lines at the grocery store and post office. What isn’t always obvious, is that those same impacts are affecting critical behind-the-scenes members of the workforce. Ninety-eight percent of Incline/Crystal Bay firefighters do not live here. The school district and hospital struggle to attract teachers, doctors and nurses who can live in the local community. 65-percent of the workforce in Incline/Crystal Bay drives from outside the basin every day to get to work, clogging roads and filling limited available parking. The primary reason for it all is the lack of local housing available and affordable to a wide range of income levels.

The issue has been analyzed, studied, discussed and disputed for many years with little to no progress. Today, the Washoe Tahoe Housing Partnership is releasing a Housing Roadmap that provides reasonable options and solutions to improve housing options. The Housing Roadmap was developed over the course of the past year and with participation and input from a wide range of community stakeholders.   “We believe that the people who work here are a part of the fabric and vibrancy of our community. They deserve to live here and thrive here just like the rest of us,” says Kathie Julien, Incline Village resident.

The lack of workforce housing has had a major impact on our community. Addressing these issues is critical. I applaud the many agencies, businesses and organizations that form the Washoe Tahoe Housing Partnership. The roadmap offers a range of short and long term solutions from which the community can choose,” says Linda Offerdahl, Executive Director of the Incline Village Crystal Bay Business Association.

The Housing Roadmap takes a multi-year phased approach to the housing solutions it offers. The first phase is already in the early stages through discussions with a local business that provides financial incentives to homeowners who offer long-term rental opportunities to local workers.

This idea is just one of many proposed strategies that takes a long-term approach to solving the housing crisis. The Roadmap’s success depends on the input and participation of the community. To learn more and to get involved, https://tahoeprosperity.org/wthp/.

About Washoe Tahoe Housing Partnership:
At its core, the WTHP is about community. Their work is focused on keeping Incline Village and Crystal Bay a vibrant, thriving place for families and individuals, visitors, businesses and the local workforce. WTHP’s goal is to accelerate housing solutions for local workers.  Solving the dire housing situation is directly connected to issues such as traffic and congestion, keeping local businesses open, maintaining strong local schools and ensuring critical services like the hospital, fire and safety are all very much in place. The Partnership is a volunteer group of local individuals, agencies, non-profits, businesses, faith and service-based organizations. WTHP values the unique and amazing community of Incline Village and Crystal Bay.  They firmly believe that by coming together as a community, the housing challenges can be solved.  More information visit https://tahoeprosperity.org/wthp/.

The Lake Tahoe School track & field team finished another highly successful track season at the Tah-Neva championships in Carson City on May 16. On a beautiful sunny afternoon, 22 different middle schools from the Tahoe Basin, Carson City, Reno, and other parts of Northern Nevada and California met to battle it out, all determined to achieve individual glory and team championship trophies.

The LTS Bobcats dominated the meet and were rewarded for their efforts by claiming three D1 team championships – 7th grade girls, 7th grade boys, and the 8th grade girls. The 7th grade boys not only won the D1 title but also were the number one school in the entire Tah-Neva League.

Aquatics Program of the Year

May 27, 2023 | Member Submitted

Submitted by Sheila Leijon | Director Incline Village Parks & Recreation

It is with great honor and pride to announce that the Nevada Recreation and Parks Society has recognized Incline Village Parks and Recreation’s Junior and Mini Lifeguard program as Aquatics Program of the Year

After three short years, this program has evolved into an important and popular camp for 5-8 year olds (Mini-Guards) and 9-15 year olds (Jr. Lifeguards). The programs focus on water safety, the development of aquatic skills, physical fitness, teamwork, and leadership skills. In addition, participants gain lifeguarding skills, learn CPR/first aid, and experience open-water swimming. “Graduating” participants ultimately will be better prepared to become certified lifeguards for Incline Village.

This program also concentrates on training and developing our lifeguards/coaches. Pre-season training has allowed these employees to develop and enhance their leadership and organizational skills. As part of this award recognition, we would like to thank and recognize our staff for their dedication and commitment to the Junior and Mini Guard programs.

Season #4 for Junior Guards will begin July 10, 2023, and will include a new curriculum that will challenge and enhance the camper’s skills and knowledge. When you see us at Incline Beach, Burnt Cedar, and in the water, come by and see what this award-winning program is all about.

PINE NUTS – Best House Dance Ever

May 26, 2023 | McAvoy Lane

Away back in 1961, the SAE Fraternity at the University of Oregon held a House Dance in a barn out in Creswell, thirteen miles south of Eugene. I got there early with a date I had met that afternoon, hoping she might teach me how to dance before the party started, Peggy was her name. Anyway, we were standing around making small talk when a bus pulled onto the dirt lot that fronted the barn. The bus had a rocket painted on its side, and when the doors opened, outpoured the musicians that were contracted to play while we danced, or learned how to dance in my case.

They got set-up and plugged-in while we filled our glasses from a keg in anticipation of the occasion. Finally they started to blow, we started to dance, and then something unearthly happened. A pretty girl about our own age stepped up to the microphone, kicked the heavy base of the mic stand, and swung that stand in a complete circle. Everybody stopped dancing, and we just stood there staring at her. I knew if I had a week to practice, I could not duplicate what she had done with that microphone stand. We continued to stare in awe as she started to dance like nobody we had ever seen move before, and sing like an angel sent from above, but with wings on fire.

Peggy taught me to dance that night, an easy task for her, as the music would make a cast-iron dog dance, and as we left that barn around midnight, elated and exhausted, I caught the name of the band painted on the bus below the rocket, “Ike & Tina Turner and the Ikettes.”

Fast forwarding a decade, I learned Ike & Tina would be performing in Honolulu upon returning from a tour of Asia, and as news director of KORL, I arranged an interview. They invited me up to their hotel suite in Waikiki, where I was greeted by the always ravishing Miss Turner like I was a long-lost Nutbush cousin. Ike was more standoffish, but she wanted to talk, and was ever so enchanting. Persuasive? She could talk a goldfish into coming out and taking a walk with her. Ike, on the other hand, kept to himself, until he decided to show me some jewelry that he had managed to smuggle past customs.

Like everybody else in the world, I learned to love Tina Turner. From the moment she kicked that microphone stand into a perfect circle, to that interview in her suite, to the breathtaking performances I was able to catch thereafter, she stole my heart, aorta, pulmonary, ventricles and all. My breath stopped when I heard she had been summoned to entertain in the Great Beyond. But I caught my breath, set down what I was doing, fired-up my Boom 3 Speakers, and cranked-up, “What’s Love Got to Do with It?” Tina Turner Rest in Peace…

Veterans Club of Incline & Crystal Bay Presents a Memorial Day Ceremony

May 24, 2023 | Member Submitted

SUBMITTED BY DAMIAN SMITH | IVCB VETERANS CLUB PRESIDENT

Monday, May 29th, 2023 at 10:00 am, Burnt Cedar Beach. (Arrive 9:30 am)

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance observed every year on the last Monday of May.  This national holiday is set aside to honor all Americans who died while serving their country. This year the local Veterans Club will host a Memorial Day ceremony that will include the Incline High School JROTC Cadets performing as the color guard, an invocation from Rabbi Mendel Cunin, a bugle performance by Todd Lowe, a bagpipe performance by Sean Cummings, and the singing of the National Anthem by Sheila Lejon.

I think it’s important to take a short break from our Holiday routines to remember why Memorial Day exists, why it’s a National Holiday, and to reflect upon the fact that freedom isn’t free. Please come out to Burnt Cedar this year to celebrate and honor not only those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country but also to honor their surviving family members.  The Veteran’s Club is asking attendees to begin arriving at 9:30 for a short ceremony that will commence at 10:00 am.

God Bless America!

Damian Smith | IVCB Veterans Club President
