NLTFPD Hand Pile Burning Operations this week

The North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District would like to notify the community of potential hand pile burning operations, weather permitting in the Incline Village/Crystal Bay area.

Planned Ignition Window: November 17–23, 2025 (Weather dependent, ignitions will continue through the winter, as conditions allow)
Burn Duration: Approximately 5 days of burn-down time (weather and conditions permitting)
Location:
• North of State Route 431, near Apollo and the Second Creek drainage
• Multiple small hand-pile locations throughout the district 

Total Acreage: 31.5 acres
Smoke Visibility: Smoke may be visible from the Lake Tahoe Basin and surrounding communities
Estimated Smoke Direction: North, Northeast, and East

Please be advised that ignitions will continue through the winter, as conditions allow. NLTFPD will continue to send out notifications identifying specific areas where burning will occur. These pile burns are part of ongoing fuels management efforts aimed at reducing wildfire risk and improving forest health. All operations will be conducted and monitored by trained NLTFPD personnel to ensure safety and compliance with all local and state regulations.

Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Announces New and Returning Food and Beverage Experiences

Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort, Spa and Casino, a spacious resort nestled in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, announces two new culinary offerings at its signature Italian restaurant, Osteria Sierra. The new prix fixe dinner menu features a three course Italian inspired experience, beginning with a choice of antipasti such as grilled baby artichokes with pepperoncini aioli and shaved Parmigiano Reggiano, followed by hearty pasta and seafood selections, and concluding with a classic tiramisu dessert. Guests can expect dishes that balance comforting, familiar flavors with thoughtful seasonal touches, creating an elevated yet approachable dining experience. Optional wine pairings are thoughtfully selected to complement each course and highlight the nuances of both the food and the wines. The prix fixe menu is available Sunday through Thursday at Osteria Sierra between 5:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. through December 18, 2025. TRPA to Hold Public Meetings on Housing Policies

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) is providing opportunities over the next three months to learn about and give feedback on policies intended to increase the availability of affordable and workforce housing in the Lake Tahoe Region, the agency said today. Following a year of meaningful engagement with community members, housing experts, and decision makers through the Cultivating Community, Conserving the Basin project, TRPA will launch an environmental impact statement (EIS) process in early 2026 and is seeking feedback on draft policy recommendations to include in the study.

“Most of Lake Tahoe’s essential workers and underrepresented community members are burdened by housing costs and that’s causing impacts to both our environment and communities,” TRPA Executive Director Julie Regan said. “The Tahoe dream shouldn’t be out of reach for so many families, seniors, and local workers who are commuting into the basin for jobs. We’re driving innovative environmental policies to address this massive challenge, and we want to ensure the community’s voices are heard.”

Cultivating Community, Conserving the Basin is a multiyear project to make housing more accessible while maintaining and improving environmental quality. The project will modernize land-use policies and the regional growth management system to ensure new building and redevelopment projects increase access to affordable and workforce housing in a thriving, protected environment, according to the agency.

TRPA will hold a workshop and public presentation on draft policies to include in the EIS at the November 19 Governing Board meeting. Additional presentations are scheduled for December and January meetings to finalize the scope of the EIS.

In The News – Uber hits the slopes this winter, launches reservable service for skiers and riders

Uber is offering rides to the slopes this winter with their new service, Uber Ski. Whether visiting from out of town, lacking a car or failing to book a parking reservation in time, Uber Ski offers skiers and snowboarders another option to get to the mountain this winter.

With vehicles that can accommodate up to four people and their gear, the entire family can head to the hill.

As part of Uber’s reservation service, riders and skiers can book Uber Ski up to 90 days in advance.

Reno Jazz Orchestra Presents, “Home for the Holidays”

The Reno Jazz Orchestra (RJO) will present its Home for the Holidays concert on December 7, 2025, at 2:00 pm at the University of Nevada, Reno, Nightingale Concert Hall.   

“This year’s performance will feature classic selections such as ‘Home for the Holidays’ and ‘Silent Night,’ among other rearranged favorites, all performed in a Big Band style,” said Dr. Greg Johnson, Reno Jazz Orchestra’s Music Director.

“In addition, the Reno Youth Jazz Orchestra will open the event, and three of the region’s distinguished vocalists—Whitney Myer, Kyle Rea and Cami Thompson—will perform. All combined, the Reno Jazz Orchestra promises an idyllic family outing that will leave everyone feeling merry and bright,” said Johnson.

The Reno Youth Jazz Orchestra will kick off their 20th season with their annual holiday show, continuing their tradition of showcasing young talent.

Whitney Myer is a singer, songwriter, and real estate professional from Reno, known for her strong vocal abilities and engaging live performances. She has performed on national platforms such as The Voice and throughout Reno, consistently earning recognition for her musical talent and presence.

Kyle Rea is a local vocalist who seamlessly bridges classic and contemporary pieces with his exceptional talent. Whether he’s performing solo or with an orchestra, he’s a vocal powerhouse who promises a truly special evening, joining the Orchestra to add to the holiday magic.

Cami Thompson is a singer, actor, band leader, music director, arranger, songwriter and teacher who has gained a worldwide reputation for wowing audiences around the world with her 4-octave voice of great beauty, control, and passion, as well as her zany wit.

In The News – Forty Years Ago, a Mysterious Outbreak Plagued Tahoe/Truckee

In the winter of 1984 and for most of 1985, North Tahoe and Truckee became the center of a medical mystery. Half of the Incline High School girls basketball team came down with a chronic flu-like illness, causing the team to forfeit the rest of its season. Then a handful of teachers at Truckee High School became so fatigued they could no longer work; the same was the case with a few teachers at North Tahoe High School. Symptoms were also seen in employees of the Hyatt Regency in Incline Village.

In The News – The Sally Fund launched to provide local housing assistance, prevent homelessness

 St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church, Incline Village, announces the creation of The Sally Fund to generate support for our housing-insecure neighbors in North Tahoe-Truckee. Using part of a generous bequest from a longtime member as seed money, St. Patrick’s invites our community to add to this fund–and help prevent homelessness.

Donations will flow to those in need through two outstanding partners—Sierra Community House and Tahoe Family Solutions—who serve individuals and families struggling to enter housing or to stay housed.

As Connie Skidmore, St. Patrick’s Senior Warden states, “When Sally Jane Hammel willed her Incline condo to her church family on her passing in 2020, St. Patrick’s leadership intentionally made a decision to spread her spirit of generosity. The legacy of her home, where Sally shared warmth and hospitality, as well as Sally’s known desire to help others, inspired us to launch a housing assistance fund in her name.”

In The News – Severe Geomagnetic Storm dazzles Tahoe skies with Northern Lights

The internet is flooding with images of last night’s Northern Lights, visible from Lake Tahoe with the naked eye. A long exposure photo can capture even more of the aurora activity.

The storm was strongest between the hours of 5-10 p.m. with values between 8 and 9-minus on the Kp index, which values geomagnetic activity based on magnetometers around the world.

According to NOAA that makes it a G4 or Severe geomagnetic storm. Storms of this magnitude can be seen from northern California. Had it reached a Kp 9, it would have been considered a extreme storm, potentially visible from places as low as Florida and Southern Texas.

The Local Lens – Housing Insecurity Resources

Housing insecurity seems to be a chronic problem in resort communities like Incline Village. It affects our business owners, business professionals, service workers, retirees, and the young singles we hope will settle down and start families here. When temporary assistance is needed, our family advocacy organizations, such as Tahoe Family Solutions and Sierra Community House, are the boots on the ground. Their resources for financial assistance are limited. Recently, St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church introduced the Sally Fund to raise funds and encourage collaboration among all providers. Some of you may remember Sally Hammell, a longtime resident. The Sally Fund is her legacy. Donate directly to St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church.  

Attend the Workforce Housing Series program to learn more about The Sally Fund and the kinds of assistance offered by Tahoe Family Solutions and Sierra Community House.

I know it’s a trite phrase, but it is so true. It takes a Village…here’s how some other organizations are involved in workforce housing.

IVCBA Housing Committee educates and convenes the community on housing issues. Sign the housing pledge and get on the mailing list.  Go to the Housing page to learn more about housing programs in Incline Village. Both Rotary clubs help fund IVCBA’s housing committee.

The Rotary Club of Tahoe-Incline has an emergency fund for one-time assistance with rent or utility bills. Reach out to Rotary President Pam Sheldon at pamelasheldon961@yahoo.com.

IVCBA businesses such as Sun Bear Realty and Incline Vacation Rentals also handle long-term rentals. Something not often discussed but deserving of mention is the assistance and forbearance that landlords quietly offer to local tenants who are in a bind.

IVR, Incline Village Realtors, offers a first-time home buyer workshop in the spring.

PLACEMATE is a program funded by Washoe County that gives assistance to landlords willing to lower the rent for locals.

TRPA Living Communities is the regional agency that works to implement policies that would open up and enable multi-family dwellings to be built in the basin. 

Word of mouth and social media will always be the ultimate go-to network!

Giving More Reason for the Season: Northern Lights Holiday Community Celebration

The beloved holiday tradition once known as Candy Cane Lane + Village has blossomed into the Northern Lights Holiday Community Celebration, offering a richer experience for the entire community. Set for Saturday, December 6th, from 2:00 PM to 5:15 PM at the UNR Lake Tahoe Prim Library, this year’s celebration expands its focus to embrace the spirit of giving and provide engaging activities for teens and adults, alongside the classic fun for kids.

The event’s centerpiece is the new “Giving Tree Forest.” Local nonprofits and service clubs will showcase beautifully decorated trees, each highlighting opportunities to contribute time, treasure, or talent. This offers a meaningful way for attendees to connect with and support vital community organizations.

While younger children will delight in Santa and Mrs. Claus’ arrival on a fire engine (2:15PM), craft stations, Santa Letter writing stations, and a scavenger hunt, there’s plenty for others to enjoy. Explore interactive nonprofit tables, enjoy youth and community musical performances, Cocoa with the Captain, and plenty of photo opportunities. The day concludes with an outdoor tree lighting ceremony where the winners of the Giving Tree contest will be announced.

Join your neighbors for this festive gathering that celebrates community, supports local causes like Toys for Tots, and offers holiday fun for every member of the family. It’s a perfect way to kick off the season with joy and purpose.
