Through grants funded by Incline Education Fund, this interdisciplinary program will teach students about art concepts, allow them to study famous artists and their techniques, and delve into real-world careers that employ or intersect with art.

The IES Art Program is also designed to integrate with the IES STEM curriculum.  By collaborating with classroom and enrichment teachers, the art program helps IES students gain an understanding of how the arts and sciences work together while helping to develop critical and creative thinking skills.

Avalanche Safety & Preparedness

January 11, 2024 | Member Submitted

Submitted by Tia Rancourt with North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District

With the recent snowfall and more on the way, it is a good reminder to be aware of avalanche potential and educate yourself on pre-emptive steps to take before going outside to recreate.

In our community, we have two historical avalanche zones, one in Third Creek drainage (terrain above upper Jennifer St., Sutro, Bidwell, Lunar, and Mercury Courts) and one in Crystal Bay (terrain above Lakeview Ave., Tuscarora Rd., and Teresa Court). But avalanches can occur anywhere when the right conditions exist.

When avalanche conditions warrant an alert notification, residents can expect a notification from Washoe County Emergency Management via a reverse telephone notification called Code Red. To receive these notifications (and other alert notifications), register at Washoe County Alerts & Warnings.

Do not travel in the backcountry unless:

  • You know where and why avalanches occur.
  • You have checked the avalanche forecast in our region Visit the Sierra Avalanche Center.
  • You carry rescue gear and know how to use it.
  • You have learned to recognize the five red flags of avalanche.
  • At the very least, take an avalanche awareness course. Seriously consider taking an avalanche rescue course. Local education providers can be found here.
  • For avalanche information for our region, visit Washoe County Advisories – Avalanche.

Remember, the best tip is to “Know Before You Go,” the avalanche danger rating is only a starting point. You control your own risk by choosing where, when, and how you travel.

Head over to Incline High School from 6pm to 8pm today! (12/13) for Winterfest, a community event featuring food, cookie decorating, trivia games, dreidel games, and more. Friends and family are welcome to attend! Entrance is $5, and you can enjoy pizza and a drink for an additional $5

Make your way over to Gus’ BBQ to check out the Incline Middle School’s Holiday Light Show. The robotics class has created a light show timed to holiday music as an entry for the Incline Northern Lights competition.

Mark your caldendars for the second annual Incline Elementary School Holiday parade, Dec 22 at 10:00.  Come watch the K-5th grade students maneuver their robots down the parade route all decked out in “holiday attire”.

And here’s a bunch of great news from our schools!

Our amazing educators:

Congratulations to 2 more of our amazing IHS teachers, Amy Henderson Seitz and Courtney Taves for completing their Maintenance Certification for their National Boards.  This achievement is a voluntary, advanced teaching credential that demonstrates their accomplishments and commitment to their craft.  It is the highest certification that a teacher can obtain, with less than 5% of Nevada high school teachers having done so.

IVCBA and IEF would also like to congratulate a few of our high school students – for both athletic and academic achievements:

IHS hosted the exciting Highlander Basketball Tournament last week and Tommy Williams amazed us all by scoring his 1,000th career point! Quite an accomplishment.

And not to be outdone, our first female wrestlers at IHS deserve recognition as well. As Principal Cahill remarked, “Pearl Carle and Isabel De Paz Shine have both shone fearless determination and willingness to step out of their comfort zone serve as an inspiration to us all.”

Principal Cahill also recognized the Highlander JROTC Leadership & Academic Bowl Team (JLAB)) for their outstanding achievements. JLAB is a prestigious, nationwide competition that culminates in the Level III JLAB Championship at Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., scheduled for June 2024.

Once again, the IHS ‘We the People’ team has made it to the state competition at UNR in February.

After much consideration, Dr. Susan Enfield announces she has made the difficult decision to resign as the Superintendent of the Washoe County School District to return to Washington to spend more time with her family and pursue other opportunities.

“With a mix of emotions, we accept the resignation of our valued superintendent and support her in choosing family first,” said Board President Beth Smith. “We are grateful to Dr. Enfield for the leadership and bold vision she brought to our district. We have already discussed our collaborative commitment to a smooth transition.”

“I will always be grateful to have been part of this district and community,” said Superintendent Enfield. “I am proud of the work we have accomplished together, including:

In The News – IES Showcases Its Makerspace Geared Towards Innovative STEM Curriculum

November 11, 2023 | Kayla Anderson

Originally Published in The Tahoe Daily Tribune 11/11/2023, Written by Kayla Anderson

What first struck me about Incline Elementary School when I pulled up to the building is how a well-dressed man greeted every car, opening the door for the student and watching to make sure they made it safely inside, like a high-end valet service. (I would later learn that the man who welcomed the students was Principal John Stern.)

After his morning announcement to all students, Stern whisks us into Trina Kleinhenz’s classroom, otherwise known as the Makerspace. In these classes, “Ms. Trina” as her students call her, brings Gifted & Talented strategies to all students through project-based learning, development of critical thinking skills, discussions, and hands-on/self-directed activities. She collaborates with other teachers to create cross-curricular projects, including computer science and coding robots. While still in elementary school, students are learning to perform specific tasks in engineering design and by offering these programs to all students, the school district is promoting equity and diversity in the field of computer science beginning early in their academic careers.

Incline Village School Update with Incline Education Fund

November 8, 2023 | Mary Danahey

INCLINE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL:

KOLO 8 came to Incline Elementary School last week to film a story about the successful IES Makerspace.

This exciting program is getting recognition throughout the district!  It’s a great model for providing STEM education at the elementary school level and preparing ALL students for a solid foundation.

Here’s a link to the NEWS CLIP >

INCLINE MIDDLE SCHOOL:

The “Trash to Treasure” was a great success as students, Rotarians, AAUW members, and local community members collected almost 500 lbs of trash.  The middle school jazz band kept everyone entertained, and the Junior Boosters hosted a free BBQ.

INCLINE HIGH SCHOOL:
Over 200 students, parents, faculty, and community members attended the IHS Dia de los Muertos Celebration on November 1st, which Boosters and Mi Cultura sponsored. The event was a celebration of the Day of the Dead that showcased a community-made altar as well as traditional decorations, chocolate calaveritas, and pan de muerto. The community enjoyed the over 450 homemade tamales and hot chocolate and the good laughs and camaraderie brought on by the Loteria (bingo) games that earned them fantastic prizes.

Don’t forget the Governor Designated Stem School Open House is Wednesday, 11/08!

School News with Incline Education Fund

INCLINE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Come one, come all – the second annual Incline Elementary School Hispanic Family Info Night is next Tuesday, 11/07, from 5-6:30 pm. at IES. There will be free pizza and childcare.

KOLO 8 News will be coming to Incline Elementary School this week to film a story about the successful IES Makerspace.

This exciting program is getting recognition throughout the state!  It’s a great model for providing STEM education at the elementary school level and preparing ALL students for a solid foundation.

Stay tuned for more news about IES, as Incline Education Fund will be piloting a new ART program at the K5 school. They are hoping to turn STEM into STEAM!

INCLINE MIDDLE SCHOOL

Let’s clean up Incline and turn our Trash into Treasure This Saturday, 11/4.

Spend just an hour – either on your own or in a group – ‘cleaning up’ around town. It can be either in your own neighborhood or a particular area where there is known trash.  Then bring your trash to Incline Middle School between 11-1 for a free BBQ and some music!

Useable’ pieces of trash will be pulled out and used to create artwork by students with the helpful guidance of our local university, UNR.

A great time was had by all at the annual middle school Halloween Dance. This year, Incline Middle School hosted the festivities, and it looks like every middle schooler in town turned out for a howling good time.  Pizza was provided to fuel the dancing feet, and both tricks and treats were had by all as there were spooky hands of candy and the trick of playing as many Taylor Swift songs as she did on the Eras Tour!

The second semester is already upon us, and thanks to the generosity and support of a few of our local community members, Incline Middle School is offering a number of really exciting “Exploratories” each Wednesday.  Exploratories are “extra” classes that each IMS student gets to take each Wednesday, from 12-1:40. They are designed to help students explore new areas of interest and potential career directions, as well as the development of new skills in academics, athletics, or leadership.

A HUGE shout-out to Max Jones at Flume Trail Bikes as his donation of mountain bikes has allowed IMS to create a mountain bike class!

IMS is also offering classes this semester in: French culture & culinary, swimming, robotics, bowling, drama, student council, and cross-stitch.  And the Mountain Gateway center will be providing incredible opportunities in: forestry, bouldering, rock climbing, yoga, and snowshoeing.

Stay tuned to see what opportunities the next semester brings.

Middle school was no where near this fun (or interesting) when I was that age!

INCLINE HIGH SCHOOL

Today is Dia de los Muertos ! Come celebrate at Incline High School from 5:30-7:30 PM

Save the Date:  Wednesday, 11/8 is the STEM Night Open House at Incline High School from 6-7pm

EXCITING NEWS !

Our very own Incline High School was recently awarded a Lemelson-MIT InvenTeam® grant in the amount of $7,500 to create an invention geared towards detecting roof load from snow accumulation. IHS is one of only eight high schools nationwide to be selected as an InvenTeam this year. This is the 20th year of the InveTeams grant initiative.

The IHS InvenTeam is creating a solution to detect when the snow accumulation on a roof starts to affect the structural integrity of the building.  Mr. Adam Shoda, the Engineering teacher at Incline High School, initiated the InvenTeam application process and then worked with the students during the summer to finalize the proposal.

The InvenTeam will also work with the Incline Education Fund (IEF) to help guide the students through the development of their invention. IEF will work with the local community to bring industry professionals to act as mentors to the students and will also source additional funding to help the students build a prototype of their product and bring it to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, next June to be showcased at a technical review with the other seven teams.

Are you a parent of a middle school student? Are you wondering what high school options are available to your child?

This is a great opportunity to explore local, national, and international options to find a high school that is a good fit for your child’s academic and extracurricular interests, while allowing students to exercise their decision-making and communication skills.

If you are a parent of a middle school student, we encourage you to attend this year’s High School Fair. See you there!
