In The News – Spring weather is coming, and with it some very hungry bears

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – The snow will melt soon in the Lake Tahoe region and winter will give way to a busy spring for area wildlife. Bears that have been wintering in their dens will emerge soon and they will be hungry!

Each fall, black bears go through hyperphagia (pronounced hi·per·fay·jee·uh) which is an increase in feeding activity (consuming about 25,000 calories a day) driven by their need to fatten up before winter. Over the course of the winter, bears’ bodies utilize those fat stores during hibernation when food is scarce. Come spring, their body mass will have naturally decreased and as a result, bears will be on the lookout for easily accessible food sources to help rebuild those fat reserves. Bears will instinctively seek out areas where they can find fresh greens like grasses and forbs which can bring them into neighborhoods.

As bears make their way through human-populated areas, please be vigilant about cleaning up and securing bear attractants. The Tahoe Interagency Bear Team (TIBT) knows that many people choose to feed birds in winter, but please do not let bird feeders attract and feed bears. Now is the time to take those bird feeders down completely.

In The News – The Call to Protect Lake Tahoe Echoes Across the Nation

March 23, 2024 | Member Submitted

Originally Published on the TRPA Website 03/22/2024, Written by Julie Regan

Lake Tahoe has protectors just about everywhere in this great nation. Last week, TRPA representatives joined a coalition of Lake Tahoe supporters in Washington D.C. to urge the extension of a key piece of legislation that has been pivotal in Lake Tahoe’s preservation. The Lake Tahoe Restoration Act is set to expire in September of this year, putting a major source of federal funding at risk.

Nevada and California local elected officials, tribal leaders, TRPA board members, and public and private organizations gathered for meetings with members of Congress and the Biden Administration to stress the urgency of continuing to protect Lake Tahoe. “Team Tahoe” succeeded in drawing national attention to our numerous challenges, from historical environmental impacts to emerging threats posed by climate change. The call to protect Lake Tahoe has echoed from these mountainsides, throughout Nevada and California, and across America to bring attention to one of the country’s most treasured landscapes.

Lake Tahoe suffered severe environmental damage before strict protections were enacted under the first Lake Tahoe Regional Plan. In 1997, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) joined many public and private partners to launch the Environmental Improvement Program, or EIP. Under the initiative, more than 800 projects have been completed thus far to protect water quality, reduce the threat of wildfire, combat aquatic invasive species, improve transportation and trails, support science and research, and much more.

Visiting the Dentist?

March 22, 2024 | McAvoy Lane

What Would Mark Twain Say?

My first visit to a dentist here in the Village of Incline, was to see the intrepid Doctor Cherry away back in 1983. I had heard that he was very good at his craft, and that he sometimes practiced pulling teeth on iron rakes. While in the waiting room I read the license that hung on his wall and was surprised to see that we attended the University of Oregon about the same time. Just then, Dr. Cherry popped his head into the waiting room and said, “It won’t be long.”

You know how it is, when you meet someone about your own age, you always think they look older than you. So I was sure Dr. Cherry must be a few years ahead of me, and when I took a seat in his dental chair I mentioned, “We were at U of O about the same time.”

He looked closely at me, and asked, “What did you teach?”

We became friends, and I learned from Bill, well, let’s let Mark Twain tell us…

“The dentist who talks well -other things being equal -is the one to choose.
Dr. Cherry for instance, tells anecdotes all the while and keeps his patient so interested and entertained that one hardly notices the flight of time.  For he not only tells anecdotes that are good in themselves, but he adds nice shadings to them with his instruments as he goes along,
and now and then brings out effects which could not be produced with any other kinds of tools at all.  All the while he is plowing down into a cavity and has discovered a nerve that he only visits at intervals, according to the needs of his anecdote.
The suspense grows and you can hear your heart beat as his voice diminishes to a murmur.  Then with lightning suddenness the “nub” is sprung and the drill drives into the raw nerve! The most brilliant surprises of the stage are pale and artificial compared to this.”

While boating out on Lake Tahoe, Bill would instruct me on what things were best to eat and drink to preserve my teeth. I was tempted to protest, “Sounds like the only way to keep my teeth, Bill, is to eat what I don’t want, and drink what I don’t like.” But I held my tongue. Bill proved to be the best dentist, and even better friend.

As is our custom, we shall leave the last word to Mr. Twain…

“Dr. Cherry invented an instrument, combining the properties of the screw, the lever, the wedge, the hammer, and the incline plane.
A patient came in and sat in the chair. One turn of the crank, and out came that tooth! Its roots were hooked under the patient’s right big toe, and his entire skeleton was extracted with the tooth. They had to send him home in a pillowcase. But no matter, Dr. Cherry got a patent on that instrument, yes, as a turkey de-boner.”

IVCBA’s ANNUAL MEETING TONIGHT!

Out of a growing need for more “unity” in our community,  the community and business association was re-formed into the IVCBA. Four years ago, COVID was rampant, many businesses were closed and our service workers didn’t have jobs. Many organizations stepped forward to help ameliorate the situation. It reminded all of us to set aside politics and help our neighbor. Out of that environment IVCBA has grown to be a vibrant organization with over 285 members, including 160+  businesses, local agencies, nearly every nonprofit, along with residents as community supporters. It remains apolitical with a mission to “Grow cohesiveness for the sustainability of Incline Village and Crystal Bay”. The vision is a thriving community that supports and is supported by its agencies, businesses, nonprofits, and residents.

  • IVCBA fills the need for local information through IVCBA.org, its weekly SnapShot newsletter and seasonal magazine Live.Work.Play.
  • IVCBA fills the need for unification and promotion of community events.
  • IVCBA promotes the business community.
  • IVCBA works with Washoe County, agencies, and nonprofits on community initiatives such as housing and “Main Street” revitalization.

If you like the newsletter you are reading as a subscriber, why not help fund it by becoming a Community Supporter for $50? Go to IVCBA.org to join online, and join us tonight at the annual meeting at the Chateau at 6pm. Hear Washoe County Manager Brown speak and enjoy the “mingle and greet” afterwards with our agencies and nonprofits.

March 19, 2024 | Mary Danahey

Submitted by Incline Education Fund on 03/19/2024, Written by Mary Danahey

Incline Middle School just received word that they are now considered a “Designated STEM School” by the Nevada Governor’s Office of Science, Innovation and Technology.

Incline High and Elementary Schools received their Designations last year.  This means that the Incline schools are officially the first K-12 Governor Designated STEM Pathway in the state of Nevada.  This means that EVERY Incline student is guaranteed a high-quality STEM education across their entire K-12 experience. This is quite an accomplishment for our small schools.

Here’s more info on the designation: https://osit.nv.gov/STEM/Gov_Designated_STEM_Schools/

Watch for more in-depth information here in the SnapShot in the coming weeks.

Incline Elementary School

IES is hosting a huge Science event in collaboration with SWEP (Sierra Watershed Education Partnership).

This is a two-day STEM event of interactive science activities and a “Family STEM Night” supported by AAUW (American Association of University Women).

If you have a couple of hours, they would love another volunteer or two. Reach out directly to the school if you can help: 775-832-4250.

Incline High School

The Highlander Hometown BBQ at the Hyatt was the place to be seen last weekend.
