The Local Lens – Leadership, Service & Local Events

August 6, 2025 | Linda Offerdahl

Congrats to Captain Joseph Colacurcio who is now officially the captain of the Incline Substation of the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office. Affectionately nicknamed “Cola”, he has spent many years working in Incline and being a positive leader in our community. Please also welcome Aaron Tracy,  newly promoted to Lieutenant, second in command at the Incline Substation. Under the strong leadership of WCSO Sheriff Balaam, the substation does more than just “keep the peace”. Captain Cola, Lieutenant Tracy, and the deputies participate in community meetings and gatherings and help residents.  Mark your calendars for the annual Sheriff’s picnic on September 27.

ROTARY CLUB NEWS

The TWO clubs in Incline are active in the community in many ways. I want to highlight two of them. The Morning club is conducting a food drive for the Reno-Sparks Gospel Mission. Bring canned goods to the bin at the Rec Center. Labor Day will see the annual “Duck Drop” for the noon club. You can also thank Rotarians for the “Peace Park” in front of the Chevron station and the beautiful flowers at the bus shelters.

CIVIC ENGAGEMENT

It’s been a while since we have heard much about the projects in Crystal Bay. Get an update on the Cal Neva next Tuesday, Aug 12 at the Incline Library. Their website, www.revitalizecalneva.com will tell you that the completion date is a bit of a moving target, but sometime in 2027. This property is approaching 100 years of existence next year.  With the recent news about the failed plans for the Biltmore to become a luxury hotel resort, the revitalized Cal Neva promises to bring a much-needed facelift, along with a new venue for both visitors and locals(and jobs!) to Crystal Bay.

INCLINE LIBRARY

To prepare for writing the Lens each week, I look at the calendar at IVCBA.org. The sheer number of offerings at the library is impressive. They have events/activities for all ages. If you are still entertaining summer guests, consider taking a break from the Lake, etc., and stop in.

WILDWOOD AND THE BLACK ROCK DESERT

Burning Man is not for everyone. But did you know, there is a land conservancy group that has small private excursions to the Black Rock Desert? Learn more about this 3-day excursion in Northern Nevada with scientists in late September.

The Local Lens – Civic Action & Classical Arts

July 23, 2025 | Linda Offerdahl

Today is a big day for civic engagement! I hope you read this in time to go to the IVGID Capital Improvement projects at the Chateau from 3-6 pm. Starting at 5 pm is the TRPA Workforce Housing workshop at the community room in what is commonly called the Parasol building at 948 Incline Way. The official name has always been the DWR Community Nonprofit Center. Note: Parasol is now called the Tahoe Community Foundation.

Housing continues to be an issue for the workforce in Incline Village. Indeed, many workers and business owners commute on a daily basis. We’re glad they have that dedication, even in the wintertime when conditions can cause delays. Having a community that includes its workforce and families contributes to a stronger sense of well-being for everyone. Businesses thrive with a bigger full-time base of residents. The support of TRPA and Washoe County is very important to solving these chronic problems.

LAKE TAHOE DANCE COLLECTIVE

THIS is the big week for the Lake Tahoe Dance Festival! They are featuring professional dancers from New York and Boston to perform on the North Shore. Their Kings Beach Community Night is Thursday night. You need tickets, but they are inexpensive. What a great way to introduce your kids to a very special performing art. Dance classes are taught year-round, right here in North Tahoe.

PLUS, those professional dancers are on the Classical Tahoe stage at Saturday night’s Music in Motion performance!

I need to mention the Sierra Nevada Ballet with its 35-year history in Reno/Tahoe. Rosina Bene and her husband Steve Porter are the founders and are still at the helm of the professional dance company. They also offer dance classes year-round. They are on stage at Sand Harbor every summer as part of the Shakespeare Festival’s Monday night Showcase series. This year’s performance is Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. What an interesting juxtaposition of theater and dance! Don’t miss it. Next Monday, July 28.

UNR AND CLASSICAL TAHOE

This is such an interesting week for families in the community. UNR at Lake Tahoe has become a center for education and performances that are accessible to everyone. Did you know they now have a second pavilion? It is smaller but has so many uses for the local community.  It will be used Saturday, July 26 at 4pm for a free concert that is the culmination of a partnership between UNR and Classical Tahoe. It is called the Chamber Connections residency and gives UNR students a chance to study and perform with Classical Tahoe professional musicians.

The Local Lens – Stay Local and Enjoy the Music

July 16, 2025 | Linda Offerdahl

This is the time of year… at the height of our visitor season….that I give tips for maintaining your sanity and still enjoy summer. Clue: The trick is to STAY in Incline.

  • Stay home and shop local!
  • Try Natural Grocer for a relaxing market experience.
  • Remember the Farmer’s Market on Thursdays in the Incline Library parking lot.
  • Visit the beach during the week instead of the weekend. (Duh!)
  • Find all of the ways to avoid Highway 28 through town. Getting to Southwood and Northwood is a good place to start.
  • Explore the many paths between the Visitor Center, UNR Lake Tahoe campus, and IVGID trails, both around the Rec Center and alongside the Village Green.
  • Get educated at the TERC Center on UNR campus with Lake Tahoe geology and the Monster Fish exhibit in the UNR Science Center.

ALL THE MUSIC YOU NEED IS RIGHT HERE IN INCLINE!

Incline Village becomes a mecca for music in the summertime. Don’t wait for the beach nights. Find music during the week at  Bowl Incline,  Alibi Ale Works, and Glasses; Reno Jazz Orchestra is at Sand Harbor on Monday, July 21.

PUBLIC ART

Why not take the kids on a search to find murals and sculptures throughout Incline?  There’s more than you think! Start at the Tunnel Creek Café and the brand-new sign. It’s a blue frame in the shape of Lake Tahoe, featuring signage for Tunnel Creek Café and the Flume Trail, with mountain bikes. FYI, find the outside mural too!

ROUNDABOUT UPDATE

Incline Village Main Street presented its plans for a redesign of the roundabout to the Washoe County Citizen Advisory Board on June 23. It was well-received by the CAB and local residents in attendance.  The preliminary sketch prepared by landscape architects at LA Studio shows an updated design with iconic granite boulders, pine and aspen trees, and a variety of shrubs and perennials that will provide a succession of blooms throughout the season. Irrigation will be added.

The Local Lens – LIVE.WORK.PLAY Magazine and the IVCBA Digital Map are Here!

June 25, 2025 | Linda Offerdahl

It’s here! The summer edition of LIVE.WORK.PLAY! Watch for it in your mailbox or find it in various newsstands throughout Incline Village. This is IVCBA’s seasonal magazine. The centerfold has the schedule for all of the events happening in the Local Heroes 4th of July Celebration. Since the Weekly SnapShot comes out on Wednesday afternoon, I am going to make a plug for attending the two events next Wednesday, July 2…and you can attend both because they are sequential! Have an early “beer and brats” supper and a bucolic summer afternoon at Summerfest. This is Incline Tahoe Foundation’s fundraiser and supports their myriad programs, including Inclined to Bloom’s “pots and plants”.  Right after Summerfest, is the Tahoe Phil’s patriotic songs concert at St. Francis. This concert will move you to tears and make you want to sing along.

Did I mention that July 3rd is the day for the NLTFPD pancake breakfast, Local Heroes Parade, and Community Fair?!

This is the week for decorating the town and the parade route, which is along Southwood and Incline Way toward the Village Green. The Good Neighbors committee of realtors, Rotary, the Visitor Center, IVCBA, and volunteers are to be thanked for putting up the flags, Local Heroes signs, and other patriotic décor.

LOCAL HEROES 4TH OF JULY SPONSORS

All events and organizations involved are listed on IVCBA.org. I want to give a special shout-out to the organizations that start meeting in February to plan for the celebration next week:

IVCBA, NLTFPD, WCSO, TNTNV, Incline Tahoe Foundation, IVGID, IV/CB Vets Club, Rotary Club of Tahoe-Incline, and of course, Incline Fireworks! Other event sponsors include Tahoe Phil, DPSEF(bike parade). Thanks to everyone IN the parade and in the community fair.

IVCBA DIGITAL MAP – ‘VIBEMAP’

It can be difficult to find things in Incline Village. Considering that Tahoe Blvd is also Highway 28, our businesses have a challenge in having adequate signage. I assure you, they want to be found! IVCBA and TNTNV(Visitor Center) have teamed up to provide you with two maps:

1.        The IVCBA Digital Map in partnership with VibeMap, is online and includes all the business information, from location, bio, address, contacts & social media accounts. You can search by the type of place you are looking for: wellness, food, retail, services, etc. or by the name of the business.

2.        There is also the updated Merchant Map, soon to be at the Visitor Center and throughout town at our merchants.

SAFETY FIRST!

The recent tragic boating accident reminds us that freak accidents do happen, and extra caution is needed. If you are new to the area, on an e-bike or swimming in the Lake for the first time, consider if this activity is one for which you have the skills and the awareness. Read warnings and signs carefully. Motorists, be kind and share the road with bikes!

The Local Lens – Community News & Upcoming Events

June 18, 2025 | Linda Offerdahl

Inclined to Bloom

Look for the terra cotta pots by the bus shelters! Thanks to the generosity of High Sierra Gardens and the Rotary Clubs, we have flowers along Tahoe Boulevard. The Rotarians have promised to water them too!

Citizen Advisory Board (CAB) on Monday, June 23, 5:30 pm (in person or Zoom)

IVCBA will be giving an update on the Incline Village Main Street program, with a presentation on plans to update the roundabout. It was initially constructed in 2012 to improve the traffic flow and safety at the intersection of Hwy 28 and Mt. Rose. Perennials were planted, but irrigation was never installed. June Brown, a local sculptor, was commissioned to create the bronze statues of local wildlife.  Unfortunately, over the years, several cars have crashed and put those bronzes in a vulnerable position. The current proposal for a redesign would add more visibility and safety by adding granite boulders and an enhanced landscape design with a succession of blooming perennials from spring through fall, along with irrigation.  The CAB meetings are public, and you are encouraged to attend and give input into the current plans for the roundabout, as they have not been finalized.

Local Heroes 4th of July Celebration

I promised to mention every week that the parade and community fair are on July 3rd this year, Thursday. New to the parade: Uncle Sam, aka MacAvoy Layne better known as Mark Twain, will be in attendance. PLUS, the Sierra Highlanders Pipe Band, well, not the whole band. New for the community fair: IVGID is putting on a BBQ!

Speaking of Mark Twain, DO NOT MISS Twain Tuesdays at the cute little amphitheater at St. Patrick’s Church. Seriously, this is like a history lesson for your kids!

UNR@ Lake Tahoe

There are so many great things happening on that campus right now! In addition to their annual summer art workshops and upcoming Classical Tahoe concerts, don’t miss the Monster Fish exhibit in the UC Davis building. The campus itself and the trails that lead to the Rec Center make for a relaxing walk. Take special note of the brand-new amphitheater installed on the green with plans to use it for community concerts and perhaps outdoor movies. The Demonstration Garden, started long ago by SNC founder Margaret Solomon, is being revived with plans to use it for workshops on gardening at Tahoe. UNR Extension will have a program in July on its Living With Fire program.

Not so easy to see, but also important is the KUNR radio station now set up in the Prim Library. It will be staffed with summer interns looking to cover news in Tahoe. When the campus was transferred to UNR, there were many concerns that it would not be accessible by the community. They have exceeded my expectations.

Upcoming: Orvis School of Nursing will have a program on campus in the fall, partnering with the Community Health Alliance, Tahoe Institute for Global Sustainability (Dr. Sudeep Chandra), and its research on Lake Tahoe, certificates in Innovation and Sustainability, and a Center for Constitutional Law. This campus is indeed a vibrant, active part of our community.

Aloha Tahoe Spa is celebrating its 18th anniversary on Saturday! It is tucked away behind the Wells Fargo bank, but you will be amazed at how large it is and the extent of its services. It’s a struggle for small businesses to thrive…please help this one by pampering yourself or a loved one!

The Local Lens – Bike Safety & Community News

June 11, 2025 | Linda Offerdahl

More People. More Bikes. More Reason to Take it Slow, Tahoe!

With summer in full swing, expect to see more people, especially kids, out riding bikes. Some may be new to the rules of the road or unfamiliar with biking in Incline Village. Please stay alert. Also, be aware of ongoing road construction. Plan your routes accordingly, or better yet, shop local and enjoy everything Incline has to offer without leaving town.

Need a refresher on bike laws and trail etiquette? Check them out here: Washoe County Bike & Trail Rules

Graduation Time

Graduation is a community event in a small town. Incline High School has its ceremony on Monday, June 16. It is outside on the athletic field.

Amanda McPhaill is the new Head Librarian at Incline Library!

Amanda is well-known in Incline. She raised her two boys here and has been at the library for many years. She was the force behind the great Incline Block Party and Summer Reading Kick-off last Saturday.

Main Street Beautification

I want to give a shout-out to our member property managers and landscapers who have gone out of their way to clean up easements that “belong to nobody” and to landscapers who have donated their time to the Inclined to Bloom Efforts.

  • IPM’s crew and owner Larry Wodarski for hanging plants and watering them in the Village Center
  • Hoskins Landscaping Contractor for tackling the easement in front of the Merrill building. He has removed dead branches and some of the 30+ years of pine needles.
  • Christine Karnofsky, Landscape Designer for heading the roundabout redesign committee and lending her expertise and contacts at Tahoe Tree Company to procure the beautiful hanging pots in Christmas Tree Village and Village Center.
  • Jason Jurss, Happy Tiers who volunteered his time to install brackets and hang plants throughout Christmas Tree Village.
  • Pam Aaron for installing all of the brackets and plants along Sierra Verde boardwalk
  • To all of the merchants who donated money through our partner, Incline Tahoe Foundation. A special thanks to Radomir for a large donation for Christmas Tree Village.
  • Incline Village Enhancement Fund, Steve Ross and his wife for a generous donation….and for their hands on efforts with Village Clean up.
  • A big thank you to Waste Not, the IHS Honor Society and al the community members for the Village Green Clean last Saturday.
  • We are actively seeking more donations so we can plant more flowers!

I plan to highlight businesses each week as we continue to install “Pots and Plants” through Inclined to Bloom

Local Heroes July 2-4

Every week I am going to mention that events that are normally held on July 2 are now on July 3:

  • NLTFPD Pancake Breakfast
  • Local Heroes Parade and Community Fair. Find the parade route and all details HERE
  • This means that some businesses and residents will be inconvenienced for about an hour. But the road closures and detours start earlier. Pay attention to those signs and plan ahead.

The Local Lens – Community Clean-Up and Beautification

June 4, 2025 | Linda Offerdahl

We don’t need a reason or a day to pick up litter and trash, but if you are one of those people who need a schedule, Saturday is the day. Why not take a purposeful walk by picking up a trash bag and litter grabber at the library first?  Your rewards for helping are mostly intrinsic, but there IS a reward at the end, a BBQ at the Incline Library Block Party. There will be plenty of things for kids to do with the nonprofit “meet and greet” tables, and it gives them a chance to sign up for the summer reading program. Thank you to all the participants, but especially to Waste Not and Incline Library.

While you are out there,  stop and smell the lilacs along the way!  It is the season for so many blooming flowers, our village truly is “Inclined to Bloom” this time of year. IVCBA has installed flowers in the Christmas Tree Village and in the Village Center(more coming).  A big shout-out goes to Jason Jurss with Happy Tiers for installing the brackets and flowers in Christmas Tree Village.

When we first started this campaign, people wondered how we would pay for it. I said that businesses and the community would get behind it. The first businesses to do so are Happy
Tiers, Village Pet Foundation,  Sierra Verde, Pet Network Thrift Store,  the Fitness Loft, and the Rotary Clubs. Incline Tahoe Foundation is our partner. If you want to help, make a charitable donation at Inclinethahoe.org. Look for Main Street Beautification on the Projects tab of find the QR code of the graphic in SnapShot.

The second thing people wondered about is how we will water these flowers. Not an easy task!  We are relying on merchants and property managers like IPM and Tano at Village Center. But we can use volunteers! If you help water these flowers, reach out to me at Linda@IVCBA.org.

Fire Adapted Communities and Defensible Space

North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District makes such a difference in our community. They work tirelessly to keep our community safe from fire in many ways. They provide free pickup for lawn waste. We take it for granted, but not every community does that.  Tom Milhoff and the Upper Tyner neighborhood have set a high bar and standard for other neighborhoods to become Fire Safe and become a Fire Adapted Community. Linda Kahrs is organizing the Lariat Circle neighbors; we hope to connect with other Lower Tyner neighborhoods too.

If you can’t tell, I am “ALL IN” on this clean-up and beautification thing. I hope you are, too.

If I have any energy left on Saturday, I will stop in at Cornerstone’s Community Market. It sounds like a yard sale AND a venue for anyone selling custom crafts. In the evening, there is a concert “Words to Water” at Bowl Incline to support Steve and Tracy Tomkovicz’s favorite charity, supplying water to needy communities in the world.

One more thing: IVCBA just filled Welcome Bags with goodies and literature from many of our businesses, nonprofits, and agencies. If you are new to town or know someone who is, reach out to Info@IVCBA.org to get one!

Have a great weekend!

The Local Lens – A Village That Loves Its Pets

May 28, 2025 | Linda Offerdahl

In my next life, I want to be a dog in Incline Village. Pets are family members here…they are revered, beloved, and I swear, they get more attention than babies! We have a whole social network around them.  It’s called the Pet Network Lake Tahoe.  Full-service care for rescue animals, including surgery and urgent care, only begins to describe their considerable services. This social network includes their humans, too. Under Simi Balter’s inspirational leadership, social, aka FUNdraising, opportunities abound year-round. This weekend, Richard and I will be at the annual Fur Ball, themed Tails and Tapas, which will be held at ICE, Incline Center for Events(Bowl Incline). The Dave & Cheryl Duffield Foundation is the largest sponsor of the Fur Ball. It’s probably too late to get tickets, but not too late to donate to their latest cause: adding a hospital wing to the Pet Network building. Shoppers can support Pet Network at their thrift store in the Post Office shopping center next to Glasses Wine Bar.

Other Animal Service Organizations

That social network for pets extends beyond Pet Network. Need financial help with that surgery for your pet? Reach out to Village Pet Foundation, which also operates a thrift store in Christmas Tree Village. Wylie Animal Rescue is active throughout the North Shore. Rotary now packages “street survival bags” that include goodies for dogs of homeless people. If fostering a dog is appealing to you, reach out to Liberty Dogs, located in Reno, but founded by the Dave & Cheryl Duffield Foundation. Other retail and service operations, particularly pet sitting and pet baths, too numerous to mention, also support our furry friends in Incline Village and Crystal Bay.

Inclined to bloom

IVCBA is bringing “pots and planters” to our shopping centers. In the month of June, look for hanging baskets in Christmas Tree Village and Village Center and terra cotta pots by the bus shelters. Please help us bring more flowers to Incline! Donate through our partner, Incline Tahoe Foundation, Inclinetahoe.org.

Incline Green Clean is June 7 for you and your family and friends to help clean up the Village.

EVENTS THIS WEEK

TONIGHT, Boosters is putting on an awareness campaign against impaired driving. “Loved by a Village; Come Home Safe” starts at 4:30 at the high school. Come show your support for our students as they enter into the prom and graduation celebration season.

Please do go to the IVCBA calendar to see all of the events, but I want to highlight the North Tahoe Community Choir’s annual Broadway concert at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church, Thursday at 7pm and Saturday at 3pm. Donna Axton is the founder and conductor of this small but powerful choir that puts on concerts twice a year.

IVCBA Kicks off ‘Inclined To Bloom’

May 28, 2025 | Linda Offerdahl

Spring and summer are glorious seasons at Lake Tahoe. Now that Memorial Day is over and June is right around the corner, planting and landscaping season are officially here. Many people supplement their perennials with annual flowers that provide continuous blooming and color. Incline commercial centers are no exception. IVCBA is launching a “planters and pots” project to assist with providing a cohesive look in those centers. Hanging planters are being installed in Christmas Tree Village and Village Center. Terra cotta pots with flowering plants will be placed by the bus shelters. All businesses are encouraged to participate by ordering a planter or a decorated terra cotta pot through Linda@IVCBA.org. Community members can help by donating to the Beautification Fund on Incline Tahoe Foundation’s website.

Main Street Beautification campaign

The campaign starts with cleanup, particularly with maintaining defensible space around properties. Neighborhoods can become a FAC, Firewise Action Community. Individuals, church groups, and other affiliations can start their own Tahoe Blue Crew. These efforts culminate in a village-wide “Incline Green Clean” sponsored by IVGID’s WasteNot on Saturday, June 7.

The Main Street Beautification committee has several components: Inclined to Bloom ‘Pots and Planters,’ Roundabout Redesign, and Public Art. These programs are all community-led initiatives to beautify  Incline Village.

Perennials vs.  Annuals

Some of these plants bloom once in the season, like daffodils and tulips. Others will have multiple blooms throughout the season. Lupines can be found along Incline Way and other parts of town. Often, people supplement perennials with annuals to add more consistent color. Although all plants benefit from good soil, fertilizer, and regular watering, plants should be chosen based on location and consideration for the environment. Many native plants are drought-resistant and can survive in the native desert soil.  Contact one of IVCBA’s many landscapers for expertise: Incline Property Management, Canopy, Christine Karnofsky Plant Design, and Hoskins Landscape Contractors.

Where to shop

High Sierra Gardens is our local nursery that stocks trees and bushes in addition to flowers. You can spot their location on Tahoe Blvd by their plethora of blooming flowers along the boulevard. If it’s just annuals you are looking for, Grocery Outlet and Raleys are both convenient places.

SUPPORT INCLINED TO BLOOM

Not all of us have a green thumb or a garden. Please help us make Incline a flourishing flowering place to live by donating! You can Donate at Incline Tahoe Foundation.

The Local Lens – Memorial Day Weekend

May 21, 2025 | Linda Offerdahl

Memorial Day Weekend is early this year. It’s hard to decide what to do…ski at Palisades? Hit the golf course?  Or go hiking?  Or all of the above! But start your Monday at the Village Green for the annual Vets Club Memorial Day Celebration. Note the new location! Three reasons for moving it: easier for people, especially the older Vets, to get to the site, open to everyone without an IVGID card, and the most important: site dedication and installation of the flags for the Vets Memorial monument. This effort is led by Michael Goss, including the funding and all of the work to get it through the political process at IVGID. Thank you, Michael! Thanks to all of the Veterans for their service to our country…and to the organizations that support them: Incline Village Veterans Club, Onward Ops, PTSD Now!, and Military Officers of America Association.

MAIN STREET BEAUTIFICATION

The roundabout is looking fabulous right now, thanks to Incline Property Management for doing the annual clean-up, pro bono. Thank you, Larry Wodarski and crew! Speaking of the roundabout, a Main Street committee is working on a redesign of the roundabout that would make it more visible to drivers, add irrigation so we can have more perennials, and add more iconic granite boulders to mark it as the gateway to Incline Village and the beautiful East Shore.

Village Clean-up on June 7, starting at Incline Library.

Gather your family and neighbors to pitch in on this important endeavor. Pine needles and other yard debris can present fire hazards, and it’s shocking to see how much litter accumulates over the winter. It’s a twofer…cleaning helps beautify our community as well. Businesses participate as well. Thank you to the many landscapers and yard crews that do so much of the grunt work.

Your reward is the Block Party on June 7? Join the BBQ at the Incline Library Block Party and Summer Reading Kick-off. They are celebrating 20 years in the new building. There will be plenty of nonprofit tables with handouts and activities for kids.

Public Art Committee

Here is another effort to beautify Incline and make it a welcoming place for visitors. It is busy finding symbols of our community and how to incorporate them into functional art pieces that establish an identity for Incline Village. We have a lot of public art already. If you haven’t noticed, it’s time to get out of your car and take a walk! Can you find….Buddha’s eye (UNR lake Tahoe campus), five kids in a Tree (Incline Library), the Parasol Building Statue? I also recommend two walks: The Earth Walk by the Visitor Center with its Galis Dongal (Washoe tribe dwelling) in front. Thank you, Jacqui Chandler!  The East Shore Trail has murals in the tunnel that are fun to discover.

HOMEBUYERS WORKSHOP TOMORROW NIGHT

Incline Village Realtors is spearheading this event at the Chateau on May 22. If you ever dreamed of owning your own home but thought it was out of reach, come and get inspired and learn what assistance is available.

NUTRITION CLASS AT NATURAL GROCER ON SATURDAY

I am greatly relieved to hear that not all fats are bad! Learn more on Saturday at “Demystifying Fat” at Natural Grocer. Why not start your Saturday shopping at this unique market AND go to the class!
