Local Lens – Community Updates

May 3, 2023 | Linda Offerdahl

TRANSPORTATION

The Tahoe Transportation Plan has been approved by the Washoe County Board of Commissioners. Thank you, Alexis Hill. Now the hard work begins. How do we move these impressive plans forward? Priority (that means money) is being placed on increasing rideshare services through TARTConnect, a multi-use path between Incline Village and Crystal Bay, and better snow removal from our sidewalks.

Thanks to our web guru, Julie Malkin-Manning, IVCBA now has a page dedicated to transportation, check it out here. It has information such as rides to the airport, TART and TARTConnect, RTC Van Pools. Additionally, it is updated with the community issues around transportation right now. Looking for links to the TTD and the mobility hub? The Tahoe Transportation Plan? You can find them all here. IVCBA has a committee on Workforce Transportation. You can sign up by sending an email to info@ivcba.org.

CAB MEETINGS

I recommend attending the CAB, Citizen Advisory Board meetings held monthly by Washoe County. The May 2 meeting was a presentation by TRPAs Karen Fink, who spoke on the work being done around housing and zoning.  The Washoe Tahoe Housing Partnership Roadmap will be presented at the CAB meeting on June 5. These are professional presentations with time for community input.

WASHOE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONER MEETINGS

We need your voice heard at local meetings! Attending the Washoe County Board of Commissioners meeting via zoom will be available on Tuesday, May 9. This is to allow public comment from Incline residents on issues that pertain to them. There is an issue on short term rentals on the agenda. The Incline Public Library is setting up the zoom for any Incline residents to speak, the meeting begins at 10am on Tuesday May 9th.

WASHOE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT

WCSD LISTENED…do I have your attention? There is a second community meeting tonight about Incline Middle School in the Duffield Theater from 6-7pm. Public schools are at the heart of every community, and we need to keep ours intact. Get the details here.

SHOPPING FOR MOTHER’S DAY

I did not know this until I looked at the IVCBA calendar, there is a craft fair at the Chateau on Saturday!! The IVCBA event calendar is a great resource for all of the local community events! Bridget Giroux Designs has a pop-up event going on this weekend too. Find them in the Incline Plaza building above Bite. As long as you are out and about, I always like to head over to see what Potlatch and Panache have going on. I definitely need to do some retail therapy!

BEST OF TAHOE

This is where you vote on your favorite businesses on the North Shore. We need YOU to vote for Incline Village and Crystal Bay businesses. This is a shameless ploy to get exposure for IVCBA businesses! I voted this week, after getting a plea from Steve T at Bowl Incline. I hope next year we can get a lot more of our businesses on this extensive list of the best of everything. VOTE HERE daily until May 17!

Don’t miss a thing! Head over to https://business.ivcba.org/event-calendar to view all the events and ways to engage with the community.

In the News: Keeping Tahoe Blue: Behind the popular sticker, there are 65 years of history

May 1, 2023 | Member Submitted

Originally published in the Sierra Sun on 4/28/23. Written by Chris Joseph.

While you’re pulling on your boots in the parking lot of any Tahoe ski resort or trailhead, look around for a two-toned blue sticker with that familiar, three-word call to action: “Keep Tahoe Blue.” It might be on a water bottle, windshield, or your neighbor’s cooler, but chances are it won’t be far away.

The simple mantra on those stickers has become synonymous with the region, and recognizable to the millions who visit the Lake Tahoe Basin each year. But far fewer people know the six decade-history of Keep Tahoe Blue and the movement it represents, which has helped preserve the Tahoe you know and love. Here’s a glimpse of the story behind the sticker.

PINE NUTS – Minister to China

May 1, 2023 | McAvoy Lane

Today’s national news features America’s Ambassador to China, Robert Nicholas Burns, he who speaks French, Arabic, and Greek as well as English, addressing mounting tensions with China. Of course, a little voice deep inside me shouted, “Hey, hey, this connects to Mark Twain!”

Sure enough, when the capable Minister to China, Anson Burlingame resigned in 1867, Sam Clemens was offered the position, at least that’s what he said. Others maintain that Sam applied for the position and was denied. Be that as it may, Anson Burlingame had a huge influence on an impressionable Sam Clemens when they met aboard the Ajax, bound for the Sandwich Islands in 1866. Anson told Sam, “You have great ability; I believe you have genius. What you need now is refinement of association.” Sam took Anson’s advice to heart and married Olivia Langdon.

Had Samuel become Minister to China, well, we might not be feeling the tensions that are so palpable today.

Sam enjoyed a short sinecure as secretary to Nevada Senator William Stewart back in 1867. “Help yourself to the whiskey and cigars, Sam, and wade right in.”

So Sam went right to work humoring some of Nevada’s finest. In answering a request for a post office at Baldwin’s Ranch, Sam replied, “What the mischief do you suppose you want with a post office in Baldwin Ranch? It would not do you any good. If any letters came there, you couldn’t read them, you know. What you want is a nice jail.”

On another occasion, when a Nevada clergyman petitioned Senator Stewart in a letter, to present a bill to incorporate the Episcopal Church of Nevada, Sam took the liberty to reply, “Petition your state legislature, because Congress don’t know anything about religion.”

Samuel claimed he retired from the employ of Old Bully-raggin’ Billy Stewart, and that “Thanks to Bill Stewart, history will show that men do not own mines in Nevada, but holes in the ground, and that a hole in the ground is not taxable. From here on, that staunch old bulwark of the state will be known as, The Great Gould & Curry Hole-In-The-Ground.”

Stewart, on the other hand, claimed he had to fire Clemens, and maintained, “Sam Clemens was the most lovable scamp and nuisance that ever blighted Nevada.”

So, if Sam had become a popular Minister to China, might his indelible humor still be a tonic today? Perhaps we should allow Samuel to speak on his own behalf. Sam observed about fellow humorist Artemus Ward following Ward’s death in 1867, “He seems never to have written a harsh thing against anybody -neither have I, for that matter -at least nothing harsh enough for a body to fret about.”

Personally, I got to teach school at St. Joseph’s College in Hong Kong a while back, and fell in love with the Chinese people. Were I appointed Minister to China today as an impressionist of Mark Twain, well, I might hang in there just long enough to see a permanent jollification set in, then retire gracefully to Lake Tahoe…

Tahoe Transportation Plan Formally Recognized

April 26, 2023 | Member Submitted

Washoe County Board of Commissioners votes to formally recognize Tahoe Transportation Plan: Using a combination of data collection, agency coordination, and community engagement, Washoe County has developed a Tahoe Transportation Plan, which was formally recognized as a guiding document with actionable solutions to transportation issues in the Incline Village area. The plan includes recommendations related to local/regional trip reduction programs, multimodal accommodations, transit service, parking, intersection safety, snow removal, State Route 28 (SR 28), and technology. The document concludes with an overview of funding sources available for various types of improvements, along with recommendations for implementation timeframes and responsibilities.

“Community engagement in the Tahoe area, specific to transportation issues were very important. We knew that on the onset,” Assistant County Manager Dave Solaro said. “So we wanted to identify all the transportation needs from the community and develop recommendations along the pertinent corridors.

“I commend your work and our multi-jurisdictional team,” Chair Alexis Hill said. “Hearing from more than 200 community members is incredible, and I’m excited to do the work to move forward.”

Member Profile – Thania’s Juice Bar

April 26, 2023 | Kayla Anderson

Walking into Thania’s Juice Bar on one of the warmer Incline Village afternoons, Thania Medina and her mom Julia are surrounded by fresh fruits and veggies that are just waiting to be blended up into smoothies, juices, or made into healthy meals.

Thania’s Juice Bar has been around for several years, opening before the COVID pandemic in July 2019. Although the pandemic did hinder business, it was a time when people were looking for healthy sustenance to boost their immunity. With delicious drinks like the Detox (made up of carrot/beet/apple/celery) and Stamina Booster (pineapple/carrot/turmeric/orange), you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu if you need something to help get through the rest of the day.

Thania was originally born in Mexico and later emigrated to Carson City when she was a teenager to be with her mother. She attended Carson High School and Western Nevada College, then worked at Lupita’s for 10 years. Thania always wanted to work for herself, though, while staying in the service industry, so Julia encouraged Thania to open a Mexican-style juice bar.

It took Thania two years to remodel the space and get it open but then she ran into kind of an odd problem- she didn’t know how to explain to people what an authentic Mexican juice bar was.

“I wanted to serve traditional Mexican fruit snacks and aguas frescas with an emphasis on made-to-order, good-for-you, healthy food. I wanted to show off my culture because I’m proud to be Mexican,” Thania says. Customers that were coming in started suggesting items that were doable but not on the menu, so Thania paid attention, researched, and adjusted the menu to meet their requests.

“I listened to people coming in and saw that they loved the smoothies and the juices. They suggested acai bowls, avocado toast, and matcha drinks,” she says.

Gesturing towards the chalkboard on the wall, Thania says, “Everything on the menu, it’s like the customers said they wanted it, and I figured out how to make it my own.”

It’s obvious that she’s passionate about the food as she talks about how she came up with a protein bowl full of a green mix, cucumbers, shredded carrots, apples, and celery topped with her own homemade vegan organic dressing. Thania added food items that are gluten and dairy-free, vegan, and vegetarian, crafting a menu that appeals to the locals.

Sipping on a creamy Chocolate Monkey smoothie, Thania explains that when she was growing up, her grandmother had papaya and lime trees, cactus, herbs, chickens, and the eggs that they laid. Her offerings at the juice bar are heavily influenced by her grandmother and time in Mexico and she hopes that the atmosphere will carry over, too.

“My grandmother believed in natural medicine. She had homemade remedies for everything. She would say, ‘You want to lose weight?’ And hand me pineapple, nopales, orange and celery blended together. And she had aloe vera to cure almost everything.

“I want people to feel when they come here like I felt at my grandmother’s house, and to be able to cook and have a conversation at the same time. I want this to be their living room with their family, their second home away from home, and for them to remember our juice, and come back to Tahoe just for that.”

Thania’s Juice Bar is on 868 Tahoe Blvd. Ste 7 in Incline Village and is open Monday-Saturday from 8am-3:30pm.
