Local Lens – Supporting Our Local Schools

April 26, 2023 | Member Submitted

The Local Lens was written by guest author Robert Graves, Head of School at Lake Tahoe School.

Throughout my career in education, I have always believed that the strength of any city or community I have been a part of is the quality of its schools – all schools. Whether independent or private, public or charter, every school should be supported, encouraged, and promoted by all. When practiced, it allows parents to select schools that best fit their children and their families. It is undoubtedly a worthy goal for all of us, a sincere and ongoing commitment to excellence among all members of the larger community.

For Lake Tahoe School, our support of all schools is integral to our commitment to the larger community. From sharing visiting speakers and facilities to competing athletically and supporting each other’s fundraising events, we believe in our area schools. In fact, many of our graduates look to Incline High School to continue their education. As members of the Incline Village community, Lake Tahoe School will always show support during our area schools’ successes and challenges.

I recently had the chance to experience some of these challenges firsthand. As many of you know, Washoe County School District proposes several options for Incline Middle School as part of a district-wide review of its facilities. Among these options is the possible closing of the current Middle School and consolidation of its grades into the current Incline Elementary and High Schools. Utilizing the primary rationale of declining enrollment, this option was the catalyst for a community-wide meeting held at Incline High School on Wednesday, April 5, 2023.

While the meeting sometimes grew contentious and often strayed from the District’s intended presentation, I was impressed with two things. The first was the high attendance that overwhelmed the small cafeteria. The crowd included parents, teachers, alums, students, and community members concerned about what such a school closure might mean for their students and our community. Even more impressive was the passion and intensity of the crowd as they shared their questions and concerns about the proposed action. Listening as they shared their experiences and what Incline Middle School means to them, I could not help but be both proud and grateful to be part of the Incline Village community.

Leaving the meeting with many issues still unresolved, I am optimistic about the future of our local public schools. With passion and broad community support such as I just witnessed, there was much to be confident about. I personally hope that Incline Middle School continues to be a vital part of our education community. Additionally, I know that the voices of support I heard that night will continue to work in the best interests of all students in our community. We are a community that supports one another, and your continued support of our local schools is greatly appreciated. It takes a Village.

If you would like to contribute to the discussion regarding options for Incline Middle School, please consider attending Washoe County School District’s next public meeting on May 3, 2023, in Duffield Theatre at Incline High School.

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — Incline Village residents came together Thursday to voice their disdain over the potential decision to locate a mobility hub at the old elementary school in a heated meeting held by the Tahoe Transportation District.

TTD has been working with HDR Engineering to determine locations all around the Lake Tahoe Basin that could be mobility hubs in order to eliminate the amount of traffic and vehicle miles traveled.

While the meeting was held to receive public comment and opinion about what a mobility hub would look like should one be put in Incline Village, many of the public commenters were focused on the need for other amenities and developments, rather than a mobility hub.

Pine Nuts – Jim Thorpe Part 2

April 25, 2023 | McAvoy Lane

Before I became Mark Twain and embarked upon a thirty-five-year journey, I was Jim Thorpe, Member of the Sac & Fox Nation, and the best athlete in the world. But let me explain…

In the fourth grade I went to the Orinda Theater with my brothers to see “The Jim Thorpe Story” starring Burt Lancaster. In that movie, a young Jim Thorpe misses his school bus, and races that bus to school. He runs over hills and dales and beats that bus to school by a full minute.

I was very impressionable in the fourth grade, so the next morning I hid in the bushes at our bus stop, waited for our bus to come & go, and took off running down a cow trail toward Del Rey Elementary. I could see the bus as it stopped to pick up more of my classmates, while I ran steadily ahead. Then the bus would pull ahead of me, and it was game on! As the bus turned into Lost Valley I lost sight of it, but ran gallantly on, as Jim Thorpe.

When I arrived at Del Rey I discovered the bus had already arrived, unloaded my classmates and was parked comfortably in the yard. I’ll never forget the look on the secretary’s face as I entered the school office all flushed, hot & sweaty. She pushed her glasses up onto her nose, put her hands on her hips and asked, “Well, who do we have here?”

“Jim Thorpe, Ma’am.”

“Well, Mr. Thorpe, you got yourself a tardy slip.”

“Yes, Ma’am.”

She made out my tardy slip and handed it to me like it was the Magna Carta or something. Actually, it was my Declaration of Independence, for suddenly it was official. It said right there on my tardy slip that I was Jim Thorpe, and I walked down that empty hall toward my classroom with a spring in my step. I might have lost my race with our school bus, but for that moment in time I was the world’s greatest athlete, and my heart was big as a basketball.

That same day I checked “The Jim Thorpe Story” out of the school library and read it under the covers with a flashlight after my mother had kissed me goodnight.

I remember how it made me smile to read that Stockholm’s King Gustav had placed an Olympic Gold Medal around Jim’s neck and declared, “You’re the world’s greatest athlete, Jim Thorpe.” To wit Jim replied, “Thanks, King.” And I made a mental note to say thanks when I was awarded an Olympic Gold Medal. I’m still waiting for that opportunity.

I guess it goes without mentioning, that the next book I would check out of our library at Del Ray Elementary was, “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.”

As a Chautauquan you can never fail, for it is a success to be one…

In the News: IVGID hopes to ease tension at meetings, discusses budget, contracts for effluent pipeline project

April 24, 2023 | Miranda Jacobson

Originally published in the Tahoe Daily Tribune on 4/23/23. Written by Miranda Jacobson.

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — The Incline Village Board of Trustees meeting on Wednesday, April 12, began with a statement from Chairman Matthew Dent regarding the tense atmosphere that has recently surrounded the board meetings.

“We are a board to represent the entire community,” said Dent. “Not special interests, not the dog owners, not the golfers, not the skiers, not the pickle ball players, but the entire community. We all work very hard and listen to the perspectives of all, and yes, we listen to special interest groups, because we must make decisions that will sustain our venues for years to come.”

Many of the examples that Dent brought forward included community members reporting ethics violations of trustees and the general harsh comments that have been brought forward by some of the public commenters both in person and online.
